"5 Nuts, a bear, a Cop & Goning Crazie!"

Have you ever had one of those days? I told my wife, seeing that brown bear yesterday near our property was a bad omen. The cows definitely thought so too, corralled around their newborns.

I got up this morning at 4:am to go MD'ing! I figured it was a good way to begin July. There's a courthouse in downtown Trinidad and a school's across the street. Right off the bat, Bigg Fisher Dogg F-75 began acting up. It does appear there's a problem with the coil connection. If it wiggles, it burps. Anyway, luckily I had some electrical tape with me and was able to fix it well enough to continue hunting. I'd taken my wife to Pueblo yesterday and knowing she was going to buy quite a bit of stuff took my other two detectors out of the truck. Anyway, Lincolns everywhere and not much else but a jerk family living catercorner the courthouse. They began harassing me and me not being in too good of a mood fought back. The cops were called and I was exonerated of all charges. :)Seems the entire family is nuts! I could've and should've filed harassment charges but was content just to be left along. The officer told me I was welcome to hunt anywhere on public property I wanted. I stayed an hour longer than I planned on; wonder why? :)

Here's my take; not really worth the effort and the headache of my July Cop Day ---

58 Lincolns
01 Nickel
01 Dime
01 Quarter

61 Coins Total

Isn't there a lake somewhere just outside of Trinidad? Is it natural, or man-made? Any recreational areas? They're probably loaded with pulltabs and screwcaps, but it might be a fun hunt.

Once you get the hang of your detector, you might want to research some gold-mining areas, and see if any are accessible. Don't tresspass onto anyone's claim, though.

Hello Allen!
Thanks for responding.

Yes, Trinidad lake is west of town off Highway 12; my wife and I pass it everyday and can actually see the lake from where we live. It's man-made. The kicker is no swimming; I don't know why. We just moved here from East Texas the end of last year and did so not knowing anyone here or much about the area.

Thank you for the advice regarding gold. I've tried a little bit of it using my GPS4000 but find myself preferring the "easiness" of coin hunting! :)

Just do some research to find them. Most of them will probably be mining-related. The only one that comes to mind is the ghost of Dalton, NM. It's a classic "Class C" ghost town, buildings still standing (somewhat), and vacant. It's visible on the north side of US 64, about halfway between Raton and Cimarron.

I just tried to find it with MS Terraserver, and didn't really have any luck. However, I did find that there is an old RR bed, and the "mountain branch" of the Santa Fe Trail, that roughly parallel that part of US 64. If you can track down any campsites, or watering holes, related to those two, and gain permission to hunt them, you could have some good finds.

You might want to find your local BLM office, and find out where the gold fields are for your area, then try to locate camps from the gold miners in that area. While you might not find any gold, you could hunt the camps for relics.
