5 gold rings at once, year later update

Some of you may recall last winter I found 5 rings while with permission, mding at an empty house lot. I did find them with the detector in some tall grass, but not underground at all. Thinking it was the right thing to do, I took them to the police, and as per their policy waited a year. Nobody claimed them! Here they are. Got quoted a melt down value of about $300. However I dont know if I believe this, two jewelers separately tested the diamond and said it was real, and thought it might be a $700-800 ring, could you believe that? Neither one appraised the white gold ring which they thought contains a sapphire and two rubies. I think I finally paid for one of my many machines. By the way that is the same lot where I got the second barber half of my life, several IH pennies, mercs, wbs and my friend got a seated liberty dime there, yikes. Thanks for looking, Good hunts, CO

I applaud you for making an effort to return them to their rightful owner. I'm a firm believer in karma, especially digger karma! Awesome find! :clapping:

No Kidding! I guess I think of that a lot though.:clapping:..when you found all those rings together when the snow melted...score!

Melt down value of only $300 because ladies gold rings are small, very little gold. Any ladies gold rings I found were given to freinds and relatives because they didn't weigh enough to sell for scrap metal. I was told that jewelry stores get their gold jewelry "on loan" from the jewelry manufacturers. The store gets the stuff free and can return any jewelry that doesn't sell. They aren't interested in buying our diamond rings because they can't return them to us if they don't sell. I don't know for sure but that's what I was told.

That is a nice haul, for sure. Those are the kinds of finds that make us wonder about the tale behind them. Were they all the same size? Good on checking for the owner(s). HH jim tn

you know guys I got them appraised cause never scored such a haul. Truth is Ive never sold any of my jewelry or coins, keeping them for my two sons(14 and 20). took them out when they where young but they never got the bug. The younger one says dad since your birthday is a special day, ill go out with you only on that day.-i hold him to it too. I will never forget the time I found these. I was shocked. Took them to the authorities as supposed they where hot. Still believe that, although there was some bar code tags with them, the police said they couldnt trace them, it didnt pan out. Looks like a ring toss to me. Who knows why. Could be a kid from former owners. Could have been something else. What a nice day though...thats a big haul. hh an gl. -Joe

If I found five rings is spike my detector and walk off the field!! Hmmm, maybe just my pin pointer. Nice score!!!

300 melt is way off. my buddy got over $200 melt for one 10k class ring. congrats on your find

A good jeweler would give you melt value of the gold and return the stones . Thats the way i get it done . Nice finds HH Jim

Guys , melt is based on weight. And as someone mentioned, lafies rings are light, isually less than 3-4 grams. If 10k , obviously lower value. However, they do add up to around 15-15 or so. Worth scrapping to right buyer.
