I got my Exc.5" in this past week and took it out on 3 short hunts. The first 2 were local parks that have a lot of modern trash like tabs and drink cans, etc. I found some clad, pennies, and a few nickels.
I found them in heavy trash and around large junk items so I was reasonably happy with the results but I really got it to use around old house places where there will be large amounts of nails and larger than nails iron debris. I was especially wanting to see how it would do when I hit the larger than nails to see if I got false good signals so I went to an old house that I had checked out thoroughly with the standard coil and where I had checked with another brand detector with an 8"coil. I dug a bunch of shotgun brass, small rifle cases, small pieces of lead, zinc, brass. the one piece of zinc that I dug had at least 2 nails in the hole with it. A small flat piece of brass was found was about 2" to the side from an iron round cone shaped item, I have no idea what it is but it was putting out one heck of a signal. The tone I was getting from brass piece was clearly non ferrous. The main thing that I wanted to check out was how it would ID the larger deeper iron and it did fine, the same as the 10 coil. I wish I could have stated that I found a goodie but that will come later as I detect. I found all the non-ferrous items that the other coils just simply didn't see. The main reason for this is to let those know that it is an excellent coil that will help in those trashy spots. It doesn't have the same depth as larger coils but it will do great in tight spots. I am just learning how to use it and will probably change my settings as I get to know it better but I was using -14 for these hunts and yes that may limit depth at that setting but it did knock out nicely most chirps from all that iron that I was going thru. I am not looking for superior depth from this small coil to start with, just maximum separation and I am so far well pleased so if you need a good coil for trash then get one. I am not endorsing a particular brand and I am sure the other brand will do fine as well. Merry Christmas everyone and thanks to all who participate on this forum.
