5.75 Widescan or Round concentric

I am thinking of getting a smaller coil for my Vaq. I have the 9x8 stock and a SEF 10x12. What are the advantages or disadvantages of a 5.75 concentric versus a round widescan coil?
Thanks,
Andy from Hillsborough

andy the DD is going to get deeper in mineralized ground , thats what i have found , I had the 5.75 DD on my Vaq and it worked good

Disadvantages of the DD is the pop top problem.
Man, so many of them sound good like dimes or quarters and won't disc out like they usually do with concentrics.
There are ways to tell which is which, but the fastest way is when I look at the drop in the numbers on screen units when I rim the edge of the coil over them.
Using my Vaq all the techniques I have tried to I'd them with confidence just takes too long so I usually just dig them.
In pop top infested sites I try not to use DD's, or if I do they are mounted on my Fishers.

On the other hand that small widescan does have that long scanning field, and I have learned that that longer blade-like scanning area just picks up targets, or just pieces of targets, no matter what part of the coil hits them.
I move pretty fast, sometimes, and that wide field and the Vaq's speed helped me find nice things...or it seemed that way.

On the other-other hand...I found this small gold ring in a huge area with my Vaq and the 5.75 concentric coil going pretty fast too, so take that as you will.

My soil in the NE. part of Kansas is great, I get fantastic depth with the concentric so I never had any thought of going the way of the DD on this one which was mostly to be used in heavy trash.
It does great in that situation too, by the way.

I will give you a third option the 5x10 DD wide scan. REVIER is right bottle caps do not disc out with DD coil but they do sound harsher than a good target.
The reasons I use the DD 5x10 wide scan on the Vaquero
No webbing to hang up in brush.
Elliptical shape coil gives a large foot print coverage yet the toe of coil fits into tight spots even tighter than the 5.75.
DD signal gives that knife edge signal
Does better in hot soil.
Lighter than stock coil.

I have had the 5x10 on my Vaquero for a year and have no plans to remove it.
While trying to choose a second coil for the Vaquero I noticed that so many other makers of detectors were using DD wide scan coils as stock coils and so that is what pushed me to the 5x10 DD and not the 5.75.
Hope you find the coil that suits you.

I use the 5.75 coil mostly in the woods. It gets into narrow places where the larger coils won't fit. This means the standard side to side sweep isn't always used, often I find myself using a back and forth movement of the detector coil to get between things. The cone shape of the concentric coil detection field is better for this type of hunting, the blade shape detection field of the wide scan coil misses too much. That's my opinion.

I prefer the 5.75" concentric coil for its better discrimination capabilities over the DD coil. I have good dirt here in Midwestern Illinois, but I might prefer the DD if that wasn't the case.
Heck, just buy both coils and cover all the bases......:detecting:............HH

I prefer concentrics for all the reasons listed above! My soil is very neutral so a concentric runs great.

i have the stock coil, 10x12 dd and 5.75 concentric. there is so much metal in the areas i presently hunt that the dd just sounds too much. the concentrics are easier to discriminate/pinpoint and depth is good.

thanks for everyone's help. Now I may have a suggestion for my family when they ask what I want for my retirement coming in 2 weeks. I hope the Calzadore, when it comes, will use the same types of coils as the Vaq.

I haven't tried a 5.75 wide scan coil yet, but I'm going to. I bet it would work great on my Tejon, Vaquero and Cibola in super trashy places.

I'd like to see how it would stack up against my 5.75 concentric coil.

Found a 6" penny today in high mineral sand with the 575 widescan. Its was all corision
sounded soft and solid. Id been over that spot with my 575 concentric. They are both good.

the 5.75 DD was awesome on the Tejon. Got me 7" deep dime in this nasty dirt and pounded the 6" dime
