5.3 inch coil

I got out before the showers today and figured I would hit my "hunted out" old amusement park site...only to find that the foot bridge had washed away in the recent storms. I was determined to get to the spot so I dragged an old rusted driveshaft that was lying around and got it across the stream next to a leaning tree and walked across the driveshaft with all my equipment while using the tree for balance.

I have not used the small coil for more than a year, and I forgot how light it is compared with the D2 and SEF coils! It performs nicely, allowing the RX to 15 at times and gives pretty good depth, and excellent trash seperation! I also noticed that the VDI numbers are much more reliable with the 5.3 as opposed to the SEF which tends to send nickels up around 25.

I managed a few dollars in modern coinage and 5 Wheaties and an Indian head. No silver on this trip, but it was good to be back out with the V3i again.

The coins are too ugly for photos. Sorry for that!

I have heard nothing but good things about the 5.3. I have the 6X10 and it gets very very good separation.

I have wondered if the 5.3 would be better in heavier iron than the 6X10 but what I've ascertained from reading the forums is that the 6X10 is best in heavier iron and the 5.3 might be better in medium to light iron as there is definitely an advantage to concentrics over DD in mild ground and not too heavy iron. Due to the cone shape field you can sometimes "see" under iron (is what I have read and it makes sense.).

I also read the 5.3 gets a little more depth than the 6X10

You sound like Macgyver when it comes to going where you need to... ;-)

Not much to say, the 5.3 is a good coil. Concentric coils and DD coils both have their place. Use what works for you in your soil. ROB

Nicely said! :detecting:

When I use my 5.3 Eclipse coil I use these settings: TX Boost - OFF AM - 75 and RX Gain I start at 4 and increase to 10 - 12 until it overloads then I back it off until it settles down. So my RXG is set at 8 for hunting here in NM. I may lose a couple of inches or so compared to my 10DD but that's OK by me. Like Rob said: "Use what works for you in your soil."

I would go slow between 7.5 to 5.0 on the filter.

Good Luck,
TC-NM
