5.3 Eclipse Coil

How much depth can I expect with the 5.3 Eclipse coil on my MXT Pro ? I have been using the 9.5 coil that came with the MD and it has been working great, (especially on silver) , with 9"+ the norm. However, I am hunting some very trashy , woody areas and even the 9.5 can be a challenge in these conditions.

Depth with the 5.3 ? A lot more than you would expect if you're like me. Seriously, if you're getting 9"+ regularly with the 950 in your soil I would think you will be able to get 6-7" with the 5.3 regularly also, all factors being equal in an open area. NOW where the 5.3 is going to really shine for you (beyond sniping in trash) is in those wooded, tight, irregular spots. When you can regularly keep your coil closer to the ground than a larger coil you can often get as deep, or deeper, than the larger coil. I was really bid on DD's early on but the 5.3 had become my #1 coil by far before it was stolen. Try one out at a familiar spot asap and I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Nothing wrong with those numbers. You are correct when you said if you can't get the larger coil on the ground you're losing depth anyway. When I can get the 9.5 on the ground it's great, but in these overgrown, wooded areas, the 5.3 sounds like it will fit the bill. I know Monte is a BIG fan of the 5.3, as are others on this site....Thanks.

Don't forget the weight factor also fsa64. If I'm on the fence between the 5.3 and another coil I very often go for the 5.3 because of it's lighter weight . . and that's no small thing especially when you want to do long hunts. The only coil I've used lighter is the 4x6 but there's no doubt to go with the 5.3 unless you HAVE to go to the 4x6 because of EMI, trash, etc. As Monte and other experts have pointed out, the balance with the 5.3 on the end of an MXT (or DFX,etc.) is superb and that's equally important as weight. Definitely one of the great machine/coil combinations around IMHO.

IMHO the 5.3 is good enough to use as a regular coil for most hunting. It performs very well and provides enough coverage for anything but the large, fairly clean, open areas.

Just bought a MXT Pro and I like the 12 inch coil but wish I had a 9.5 instead. The 12 inch coil will wear your arm out , fast

Just bought the MXT pro and came with the 12" coil. bought the D2 and the 5.3. My last detector was the MXT 300 and I found that 90% of the time I had the 5.3 on it. The balance was good. weight was light and maneuverability in brushy areas was superb and due to its small size I could keep lower to the ground. Unless I'm on the beach, my 5.3 is my most used coil. It's a great little coil. HH Jack

Agree 100%

I will not comment on specific depth regarding the 5.3 coil because there are several factors to consider which may vary from Region to Region. I will say that it is an EXCELLENT coil that produces suprisingly good depth for its size. In general, I have found quarters @ +6 inches with it. From experience, its great in trashy areas and i like to use it when hunting for relics & old coins in the woods because you can easily swing it around limbs, bushes other things etc. Its "lightweight" when compared to other coils that I have so I can swing this baby for longer periods of time without having my right arm go numb. It is an OUTSTANDING compliment to the 12" spider and/or the 950 coil. Its also very very easy to pinpoint with. I bought it last year and have been very impressed and pleased with it. I HIGHLY recommend purchasing it for use with the MXT. You wont be disappointed.... JMHO. CCH

I have used the MXT for 5 years and the 5.3 has been on 99% of the time. I once got two wheats stacked on top of each other in one hole over lapped just a bit at nearly 9". This is one killer coil for it's size. I can't comment on the 4X6 coil because i never used it but the 5.3 seperates targets very well.

Best coil made after the 9.5 stock coil. Depth isn't as good as the stock coils, but it's well worth the loss in that aspect. I would guesstimate a depth of around 6" at a normal average setting of gain. I love my 5.3 coil. JMHO, Nancy

I'd have to agree with Nancy on the depth of the 5.3 with the normal gain setting. I just always had a tendency to run it at +3 all the time. Is it noisy, YES, but i learned to deal with that. You get in the right ground and crank it up and you will be pleasantly surprised.

I've picked up signals outside of the VDI, hitting 12"+ on the pinpoint with my 5.3. Granted, they were "whispers", but it picked them up none the less and I dug 12" plus to recover the targets...usually junk, but I know that the coil and the Pro can hit that deep. My setting have been the last preset on the gain and the first preset on the dual control. I've recently started experimenting with turning my gain all the way up...as stated, it is noisy but I have noticed that it increases sensitivity quite a bit on the whisper signals. I haven't really used my 12" or 9.5 much because I'm hooked on the 5.3
