I used to use the coin-jewelry settings but went to relic trigger forward and my finds really picked up.
At that setting you get two tones low scratchy for ferrous items and high tones for the better digs.
My MXT was bought about 4 years ago and it came with the 9.5 coil. ( not the MXT PRO )
The signal was repeatable both ways and I usually check those carefully.
If it jumps a lot and can't get a good fix usually bottle cap or piece of junk although if it goes to high
numbers and goes down to lower numbers ( up and down ) repeatedly( could also be rusty bottle cap:thumbdown: ) I'll check it as our crappy new coins have a ferrous content.
Thanks to Nancy and the other forum members that finally convinced me to go the trigger forward/relic mode.
This is my second year with this detector as I rotate yearly between the XLT and a few other detectors.
