5,000 AA Battery Question

A friend was the winning bidder on a storage locker and it contained,lets say at least 5000 batteries. These batteries are loose,scattered and piled one on top of each other. How many are good or bad I have no idea. Lets say half are good, how would I go about extending the life of these batteries.

Work with you buddy to test, package and sell them with the help of a on line auction and buy yourself a couple nice rechargeable setups, maybe a new coil, some beers! I'd get rid of them. Turn them babies into wallet sized photos of famous presidents. A picture of Franklin is always cool too!
