4900 DL/MAX is a serious coin shooter

I just picked up a 4900 DL/MAX, that is in very good condition, I down loaded the manual and after reading it a few times and playing around with the little 49er decided to take it out for a test run.

I have to admit that I did not expect a lot of performance from a 12 year old machine, but man I am telling ya, this old detector when tuned right is one serious coin shooter. I mean you better be ready to dig 6" plus in hard soil when you take this puppy hunting. I did not find anything old, only because it was not there.

Does anybody have any tip's on using a 4900 DL/MAX that they can give me. I know a lot of guy's have used these in the past, I know it likes a fast sweep speed.

I love my old Coinmaster 5000D, series 3. I use it for farm field hunting and have dug up coins almost 1 foot deep with it. You do not get a coin signal at that depth. What you do get is no null of your threshold, so you know it is not iron. I have dug several coins this way. They were way beyond the disc capabilities of this detector, so I have to hunt in all metal to find the coin. After a quick check in disc mode to see if threshold nulls, if not I dig.

Here are some finds from this week and last week.

Deep targets are smooth soft whispers. I have gone back to many fields were only deep targets are left and pulled Minnie's and plates out. It is a dinosaur now but properly ground balanced in bad minerals it will get the job done. Several hundred plates were dug with mine over the years. But I'm a sucker for every new design and won't be going back to the old designs.
