46' Washington

Went back to the hotel today and came up with 7 memorials, 5 clad dimes, a 48' Rosy,(I think, it's pretty worn), and a 46' Washington that should clean up. Not sure what the 8 is and the other is a paper style shotgun shell. The Washington rang iffy and was on edge at 6". I dug over 40 pull tabs last Sunday and came up with 1 nickel. I know there's still good stuff there, but just so much trash to get thru. One of these days when the warden isn't looking, I'm going to buy a 4.5". Does anyone know when Buffalo nickels quit being passed around? The hotel was built in the 50's and I did find a 1918 wheatie last week so it just makes me wonder if there are any there.

Looks like your doin real good there. I looked up the Buffalo and it says 1938 was the last year. Which detector do you have. I have surface elimination on mine. It is nice to use in trash areas. I think it starts at 2" below. Then you can go back later with the 4.5 and detect from the surface on down.

I have a 1500. I knew the buffalo ceased minting in 38', but guessed it was probably around till the 50's. That's way before my time. What machine do you run that has the surface elimination? Where in Co. are you from? My family roots are from LaJunta.
On the 1500 shouldn't a buffalo ring at 3.5 or 4? I find very few nickels and usually I just notch them out. I'm sure I probably miss some, but seems like all I ever dig at that range are pull tabs.

I have a 2500 and GTA 1000. Both have this feature. I am not sure about the buffalo on where it shows up. I am real bad at keeping track of where the average nickels ring in but usually it is 4 to 4.5. I dig everything in that range in case a ring may show up. Hope to find a Gold one someday. I have only been at this a couple of years so i`m still learning. I am just N. of Denver.

I gotta know, Bob! How do you like the surface elimination feature? Having found one merc and several wheaties at less than two inches over the years, I've never had the stomach to try the surface elimination on my 2500 for fear of what I'd be missing. <img src="/metal/html/sad.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":sad"> I'd sure like to hear your thoughts on the subject.

Nice finds. Think Buffaloes bit the dust in the thirties.

The figure eight is one of the first pulltabs. Some were really big and called "big ring pull tabs."

Yeah I've found some oldies at two inches or less including a coin from the 1700's.

I hope you get to work on those rings. I usually find about ten a year. After the decades that I've been at it I have over 200 rings, including quite a few gold ones.

I have used it a couple of times and for the most part i forget i have it. Like you and Bill(OR) said ,there are plenty of items in that first 2". That is where i have found a lot of coins too.I think it is a nice feature for a high trash area when at the time you don`t feel like messing with trash and want to find more goodies. Hopefully anyway. It is a trade off. Give it a try and see what you find. Try it at 2" or more inches below and dig all that and then come back and weed through the trash from the surface on down. Either way ,the trash is goin to be there. I am going to try it at a school i`m checking out because of all the nails and crap from some work being done on the place. I found a wheat there at 4" so we`ll see.

was a kid in the early '60s, we got rolls of nickels from the bank & sometimes close to half would be the Buffalo type. Some full dates, some partial dates, some no date. Lots of Liberty standing quarters still in circulation then, too. Indian cents, Liberty Head nickels & Barber coins circulated somewhat into the '50s. The newer silver got pulled from circulation in the early '70s when coin dealers started paying 10% over face. Also, I remember in 1964 (in Minnesota, at least), you could go into a bank & get a roll of silver dollars (1878-1935) for face value. HH, George (MN)

Yeah in the 80's when the Hunt Brothers drove the price of silver up to $50 an ounce many tons of it got turned in and melted down. I remember the long lines at the coin stores of people selling everything they had made of silver. Saw tons of old, beautiful, silver coins going over the counter.
The Hunts made a fortune and took a lot of coins out of existence.
