I got out and did some metal detecting at the river last Saturday after Thanksgiving and was disappointed to see someone else had been there before me and left their holes uncovered. I filled in some of them, but there were too many to fill in all of them.
I damaged my digital camera somehow and got sand into the lens and it won't extend now. I had just repaired it by replacing a broken lcd screen a few months ago and wanted to post some photos of what I found.
The public library won't let me download photos to their hard drive, but I found out I can download them to a flash drive on the USB on the computer and hopefully upload them from there.
I found 4 rings and a necklace and lost one ring trying to put it in my pocket. The necklace and one ring are costume jewelry, I believe. 1 ring is a 10K gold ring with the stone missing and one says sterling, but the mark is <0>, so I don't know for sure. I don't have a jewelry scale at this time to weigh the gold ring, but it's my first and I am proud. I was working a grid back and forth and got pretty tired and started to wander off the grid and said to myself, no, stick with the grid and the gold ring was my next find. It showed up as 3.5 on my GTI-2500 and a B target. I had dug so many pop tops and 22 caliber shells, I almost passed it up. Glad I listened to the more experience members and dug everything. The sterling stamped ring rang up as a 5.5 B target.
I failed to listen to Mr. Garrett's advice to be prepared, be persistent and be patient and did not have a water scoop and I waded out about knee high in the water and was getting some good signals and the wind was blowing so hard, when I tried to dig the targets, the waves filled the holes in before I could find anything. It was cold weather and a strong wind all day. Besides the pop tops, beer bottle caps, nails, broken drill bits, bullets and casings and electrical parts, I found what I believe to be an old copper coin. It's very corroded, but has United States of America at the top and I can see some letters, but not all of them under the word Amerca are the letters HASF and it looks like 1800 something. It has crossed bars on the obverse, but I could not find this coin in the Red book. I found 29 clad coins, six quarters, 4 dimes, 3 nickels, and 16 pennies. Unfortunately, I have been unable to go back due to back pain. The power commission will start filling the river in December-15th and it will be another 2-3 years before they let it down again. The last time I was there was the first week of November and the water was still high, then I had the flu and Saturday was the first time I have been back. The river is very low now and where it is knee high used to be waist high or chest high in some places. Next time I go I intend to take a garden rake and fill in the holes the other people left uncovered so I won't get kicked out of the park for what they did. Looking forward to more great finds, especially in the jewelry area. HH
I intend to order a scoop today at the library and a sling for my 2500 to keep it from getting dunked in the river. By the time the scoop gets here, I won't have much time to use it, but hope it will pay for itself with what targets I am able to recover. HH
