Today I went back to the area that gave-up 3 silver dimes the other day. I decided to focus on an area that looked like it was an old path at one time. People always take short-cuts. This spot has a lot of old trees that are all in a line. It just makes sense that people would cut through this section because they form a natural path.
So as soon as I get to the park the very first thing I notice is the kid from the day before that was chewing-up the Baseball field with his spade back at it again, but this time I'm watching him, and it seems like he was filling the holes back in today. Maybe what I said to him made sense and sunk-in? Who knows. All I know is that I didn't have to fill his holes after he left today.
I started todays hunt about 20 feet from where I found the first Mercury on Saturday. Soon as the coil hit the ground the signals were off and humming. Wheat, wheat, wheat, wheat, [deep breath], wheat...I couldn't believe how many old Wheat pennies. 19 in total, deep, and almost all were in the teens. As I got near this one tree my E-Trac let out a scream. The coil passed over a shallow coin. I looked down at the ground and saw a dime. Hmm, ok, someone just dropped it recently. I bend down, pick it up, and !!!?! It's a 1918 Mercury dime! Just laying on the top of the ground. Definitely been sitting there a while. lol I still can't believe that. All this time? How? Someone drop it recently? Maybe another fellow MDer who found it and then lost it on the same day? I'll never know. It was just a great find.
Now I move about 10 feet from the surface Mercury dime and get a very weak "thunk". It's a coin, and deep, but the Fe/Co numbers are iffy, so I dig a wider than usual plug, and deep. Bam! Another Mercury dime! I can almost lay down and touch the spot where the other one was. Amazing. I get up, pack the plug back in, and start to swing again, and BAM! Another deep silver signal. This one was tricky. Dug a huge plug, and soon as I started to scoop dirt out I see silver. Had to stop and turn on the camera at this point because I was sure it was a ring. Pick it up, and I'm right, a nice silver ring with tiny diamonds(?) on it. Pretty cool. So now I'm tired because every few swings is another signal. Deep old wheats are everywhere! I decide to move this huge branch that broke-off from the tree, and soon as I check around it I get a perfect 11-48 signal. Definitely silver. Dig the plug, and out pops a shallow Mercury dime....again! Number 3 on the day, and within the hour. Actually, all 4 silver targets I plucked today happened within an hour. I'm definitely gonna hammer this sweet spot this weekend. Below are the pics and video I made. Enjoy! ~Fin
