4.5" x 7" or the 5" coil

I am looking into purchasing a small coil for my SE. I have an 8" Minelab coil, but want something even smaller for the really trashy iron infested parks in my area.

How would you compare the two coils in the subject line?

Depth of each?

If you had to choose just one, which would it be?

Thanks in advance for responding.

I like the X5 by Sunray. I purchased it over the 4.5x7 because I like the Sunray quality control over that of the Excelerator coils. I had the 5" Excelator coil with my DFX - while a good performing coil, it was not built rock-solid and I had to send it back twice over the year warranty period. After the warranty period ended, I ended up giving it away to my detecting partner and purchasing the Whites 4x6 as it was a more rugged design. It could take the knocking around up against the base of trees, walls, curbs, etc. that is inevitable when you are hunting that strip of ground next to some obstruction.

Depth = ? depends on user and configuration. When using a small coil, depth is not my primary desire but rather trash separation and/or the ability to work close to obstructions where others with larger coils were unable to hunt. This couple inches of ground is usually virgin and can produce some nice finds.

Yooper . I haven't used the 5"Coil so I can't comment on it . But I use the 4.5X7 .Its a Great Coil ,and around cellar Holes ,Trees ,etc. You couldn't ask for a better small coil . I've hit buttons up to 8" with it . You also get more coverage with it then you would with a 5" coil ( 2" more per. sweep ).

Being you have the 8 inch coil I don't feel the 4.5X7 would give you anything the 8 inch wont. The real trashy area is where the 5 inch can pay for itself as it will see good targets i know the other will not.
If you didn't have the 8 inch coil than for a coil smaller then the stock coil the 4.5X 7 would be good. I have the 5 inch for my very trashy site, the Joey for my hunting the stock coil is too big for and the X12 of Sun Rays when I am at a area where targets are far and few.
The X12 will give me about a inch or more depth over the stock coil, the Joey about 1-1 1/2 less depth and the 5 inch I would say about 3 inches less depth, but it is not made for depth, but separation of targets.
