3X7 or 5X10???

OK, for a semi-black sand beach with trash, old french iron coins and gold jewelry in the mix. Which coil, 3X7 or 5X10 DD would weed out the gold better in shallow saltwater? Many here seem to like the 5X10, but would the 3X7 DD be better for finding gold rings in this soup? Or is there too much depth loss with 3X7 on ring size targets? I wish Garrett made a 5 inch mono water coil for these kinds of situations. My 800 Excalibur goes nuts at this beach, so I wonder if even the Infinum 8 inch mono is too big and why I'm now wondering about the 3X7 DD?

That little 3"x7" gets great depth. If there is much surf/wave action, that 5"x10" can be a pain in the neck to use, because the toe/front end of the search coil will tilt up and/or down along with the wave action. You could always use one o'those coil stabilizers that KellyCo sells, but that causes more drag while swingin' the search coil back and forth in the water. I've used that set up before many times, but I've found that 8" mono to be the smoothest to use in the surf/wading.
Now, that lil' 3"x7" should do alright, especially since you say there is so much trash in the area. Just remember, that Infinium has a really slow recovery, so if your excal was havin' a tough time, the LS will too.
Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Let us know how it goes!:detecting:Happy Hunting!:)
