3rd time out with the T-2

[attachment 46580 IMG_0604.JPG][attachment 46581 IMG_0605.JPG]I didn't have much time to detect yesterday but I was able to get out to a local park for about 3 hours. I tried the 2+ tone mode this time. Sensitivity set at 70 and discrimination set at 10. I was just cherry picking deep hits. I was trying to find targets that would read 10+ inches deep. This proved to be pretty tough because of all the trash. This park is called Griffith Park and is one of the oldest parks in L.A. A lot of oldies have been pulled from this park and like most of the parks it's been pounded to death but it still produces. It took me about 15 minutes to find a target that was deep. The numbers were bouncing around from the mid 50's to the high 70's and you could tell there were two targets. When I pinpointed I got a reading of 11 inches. Down at about 7 inches I pulled out the tail of a pull tab. I stuck my probe back in and heard nothing. I rescanned the hole with the T-2 and I could still hear a target so I dug out some more dirt and rechecked with my probe and got a solid hit off to the side of the hole. It was a greenish looking nickel and I hoping for a buffalo but it turned out to be a 1958 nickel. It had to be close to 10 inches deep. The next 3 or 4 10"+ targets all bounced around in the mid to hi 70's and they were either beaver tails or broken pull tabs. On each target I was going to dig I would switch to the 3 tone mode and double check it. Later on I got a deep hit, the numbers were all over the place but when I switched to the 3 tone mode I sound hear a quick high tone mixed in. When I pinpointed I got a depth reading of 8 inches and when I circled the target and tried to pinpoint the depth readings would change to a deeper depth. I ended up pulling a crusty grey looking 1927 merc from about 9 or 10 inches deep. I only got three coins. The merc, 1 wheat, and the 58 nickel but I was only digging deep hits. I was hoping one of those deep pulltabs were going to be gold but no such luck.

Do you ever get a deep target that won't pinpoint? Do you dig these? So far I'm only digging deep targets that will pinpont. I've got about 12 hours on the T-2 so far and I've only lost one bar on the battery strength. I'm really liking this detector.

Randy, you seem to have hit on the settings. I have tried all of the settings and found the 2+ along with the disc of 10 to give the best depth. I dig all deep signals that read in the 70's. This detector like most other high end detectors will jump on real deep coins. I have had many Minelabs and Fishers, but this detector is the deepest nickle machine I have ever used. Every piece of gold that I have ever dug read nickle on my other detectors so I am hoping that the T2 will come through on gold. You are correct to check from all angles and I believe the DD coil will get a better reading than a concentric coil with trash present. The battery life is unbelieveable. I didn't believe my meter and changed them after 25 hours. Also, on some of the deep coins, the signal in 2+ will sputter slightly. If that happens, I always look for a good number and most of the time I will be rewarded with a coin. The last time I hunted here in Ohio, I dug a silver quarter at 10 inches and the audio was strong and the numbers were consistant. I have no doubt this detector will match my old Explorer on depth. I dug a large cent at 14 inches with the Explorer and the T2 will do the same. Keep us posted. Winter is finally here and I probably won't get out for another 6 or 7 weeks. R.L.

Good going Randy!

You're off to a great start with the T-2, You'll be more than ready and highly skilled with the T-2 on your next trip to England.

How's it feel to have the T-2 Fever :)

Congrats,
Paul (Ca)

Thanks R.L. I too am a Explorer fan and I never thought I would take a huge liking to the T-2. What stopped me from getting a T-2 before was that it only had one coil. When Paul, (Old California), said it was one of the best relic machines out there I decided to get one. I'm glad I did and I think it's a winner. I wish my detecting partner was with me yesterday so we could have checked my deep hits with his SE. I'll have to take some golf tees with me next time so I can mark some of these deep hits and then go back over them with my Explorer to see how they compare. I just started with the 2+ tone mode and the discrimination set at 10 and it seems to work very well. Thanks for the tips and the reply.

Hi Paul, You were absolutley right on about the T-2. I'm going to be sticking with the T-2 for awhile so I'll be ready for my Colchester, England trip in October. My plans to visit my buddy in Sanger might not happen soon but I'm up for a day trip up your way. I'll e-mail you later. Hope to detect with you soon.

Randy you can hunt for another 3 or 4 days before the bars start to drop. It might even go longer than that. It seems like the batt. last for weeks. The more you use the T2 the more you will like it to the point that you will not want to use anything else. Happy hunting.

Randy those are the settings I have use since I got mine. I hunt in 2+ so I can hear the iron, disc. at 10 so I don't miss anything and sens. as high as I can, usually between 80 and 90. There is a very important thing you have to remember and that is if you get a signal, even if it is non repeatable, or its scratchy, or iffy, or if you even suspect there is something there pinpoint it. If there is something in the ground you will get a good loud pinpoint. One of my first times out with mine I got a non repeatable signal, but I felt like there was something there, so I pinpointed it and got a good loud pinpoint. I dug my 1st 44 caliber Tranter bullet at about 7 to 9 inches. I have since dug 6 more in the same area, and I covered that area good with my Explorer XS. In another area across the road I dug 5 percussion caps that were mix in with some aluminum and I covered the area around that tree good, with the T2. The other day I went back to that same tree and dug 4 more percussions caps. So just because you think you have covered the area good and there is nothing left go back and look some more and you will most likely find something. I haven't used my Explorer since I got the T2.

I've had my sensitivity up to 70-75 so far and the T-2 is still very stable. I'll be trying 80 the next time out. Thanks for the tips.

I found a deep nickle this past weekend with the T2. It was at an old schoolyard that is loaded with iron (older homesite I think). Sen. was set on 85 and the meter read zinc penny. Depth alternated between 11 and 12 inches on the back and forth swing. Dug very deep and found a 1938 Jefferson nickle. Most probably the deepest coin I ever dug. Really impressive, the T2 is a deep seeker.

Hi Randy,

Is this a group of people getting together for a hunt in England? Any chance for an opening?

HH, Paul

Hi Paul,

Mark and Jeff aren't going this year. They're going in March 2008. I'm going Oct 6th through the 13th and I'm be leaving a deposit for March 2008. I'll PM the Colchester website to you. They do have openings for the week I'm going.

Stories abound in regards to that farcical holiday and all the UK detectorists know these tours are well seeded. I heard they use poor fields nowhere near Colchester and one must buy back finds from the farmers?????????????????????????????????????

My mate also told me about them buying bags of uncleaned Romans. You know where they are going. Sorry mate.
Cheers,
Liam

calmark ,we will take it that your from california by your user name .i hardly think that then makes you an authority on u,k detectecting does it .did you visit any other parts of the u.k detecting to see what reality is .did you come home with at least a few hammered coins ,roman coins, and probably at least one gold coin.
are you absolutely sure 100% calmark that the finds you made while there had not been found before .you had your dream ,you paid the admission price ,you got your free gifts .disneyland for detectorists ,if your ever over here again let me know a rich old aunty has left me the tower of london in her will ,you can buy it if you like :yikes::goodnight:

You must have time for this as you have time to trash everyone here. I get much more in the way of complaints about a post and your name is on the post and you'll be finding a new forum to hang out on. And it's not just the guys over on this side of the pond complaining it's your own mates.

Guvner..

and i bet i could name the ones who are complaing from over here ,put it in perspective there definely no mates of mine .if your lads wanna go its up to them but i know bill ladd has seen the light and he can come along for a genuine hunt whenever he's this way
