3D and Bronze Coins...

Got a new 3D last year and just now used it! It worked very well I must say! I like the old meter type with a needle.(not many left) Just wish it was bigger like the Garrett master hunter. Sometime I had to look down and make sure the knobs had not moved. Most of that is coz I was in the jungle. Found five bronze coins in a area where I thought I hunted before. I must say that I like the big meter on the Master Hunter with the big spread and separation! Depth is a good indication here of a good target with a reading around foil to nickle.
PS:The coins are Japanese cash coins..(Bronze) from 1600's -1700's
Good Luck To All! Dave

Dave,
Did those hit as nickel or foil? As I'm sure you know, the 3D is designed to knock old coins up into one of the coin facets for a hi-tone. I would figure that it would've put those up into the nickel range, at least.

Dave,
This is what I got on the five Bronze coins... These coins were lost at the same time and may have almost been made not too many years apart. The air test I did was all over the place with readings.
These coins all have differen mixture of tin and copper. In the old days nothing stayed the same.
I tried in both salt and enhance.
Coin 1 Salt - Low tone /foil
Enhance - same
Coin 2 Salt-same as coin 1
Coin 3 Salt-Low tone / Foil
Enhance- Nickle / High tone
Coin 4 Salt - Square Tabe / Mid-tone
Enbhance Same
Coin 5 Salt - High/ Nickle
Enhance - Mid tone
As you can see they were all over the place..The book said something about air test were not that good?
So, if looking for Old Bronze...Depth is your best indicator. Things dont sink much here and that is good, but they do get down to the 3-5 inch level. That is always a good indicator.
I will work with it more and get back with you later with a post here.

Good Luck and I hope this helps! Dave

Dave, The coins are Chinese.Easy way to identify is Chinese, square hole,Japanese have a round hole. Here is a site that will identify them for you.

Ching Dynasty-Shun Chih Coins

Good luck

Thanks, I have been dealing with these coins for over 20 years, The Japanese also had square holes between 1600's - early 1800's before that they used Chinese coins here because it was cheap and easy to import them.
The new Japanese 5 yen has a round hole and some coins from the early 1900's and late 1800's do too
Where is that web site?... I have lots of books, but always looking for new stuff! Thanks
Look at this knife coin about 200 BC I bought it:(
My oldest find is about year 600AD Chinese.

Good Luck!
