tree root start out small under the gound , and get bigger and bigger pushing up the dirt with cones in it , note the mound around the trunk of a tree, note sidewalks lifted up
 
Speaking of pocket gophers. Yes, always check the fresh dirt mounds. I have found a few wheat pennies in their mounds that they pulled up.
Years ago, I actually found a barber quarter at a campground in a pocket gopher mound. Everything old at that campground was very deep but the barber quarter was only 2 inches deep in the fresh dirt.
I said 'Thank you Mr. Gopher' as I grabbed the old quarter.

Old glass in a Gopher mound tipped me off to an old 1880,s privy , if you think about it the gopher mounds are nice test digs for us for free
