36 years ago today

It was 36 years ago, today, that a nervous young couple, full of trepidation and worries, took the giant step and decided to pledge their troth at First United Church, in Victoria, B.C. This wedding had everything going against it.. Neither set of parents were in agreement to the wedding. The young ladies folks wanted her to marry someone else. And the young mans' father, was in Australia before the wedding was announced. His words to the young man went to the effect 'do not get married before I get back'
Foolish youngsters that they were, they went ahead anyway. He had no job, she had no job... they had $35.00 in the bank and one month pre-paid on an apartment.. But they did have determination, an unbridled sense of optomism and a plan. Too many friends were getting married and then divorced. The young couples' solution was ....'never go to bed angry' Whatever the problem, they agreed to take the time to talk things over before they went to sleep. And, amazingly enough, that worked. Sometimes, they would stay up 'til the wee small hours of the morning, but their agreement held.
There were the good times and the bad. He was bull headed, foolish, prone to flying off the handle for small, insignificant reasons. Work got in the way of many family functions...especially when he pulled on call duty while working at the hospital. Sometimes, there was ,quite literally, no sleep for 36 hours. He got cranky, and was unreasonable in many way. For reasons unknown, she stood by him. She was calm understanding, supportive,....pretty much everything most men dream about.
In time, the young man matured, became less irrational, mellowed out and finally, became sensible. The young couple are older now, still very much in love. Both are retired and enjoying their lives together.
And to this day, I still wonder why Alice put up with me for so long.....but I thank God for it.
All the best

Debbie and I have been married thirty five years. Her folks opposed us getting married, They thought that my being from the "sticks" and her being from the "city" that it would never work.
I loved your story, can't wait to show it to Debbie in the morning. Thanks for posting it and please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
