..The S.S.Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared to the bottom of Lake Superior without so much as a hint of distress, taking 29 men with her.She was a 729 foot iron ore carrier. On Nov.10th,another ship that was in her locale at the time reports that she radio'd "We are holding our own"........What made her sink so fast???Anybody unfamiliar with the Great Lakes finds it hard to believe that there can be storms on them lakes-ESPECIALY Superior-That can rival hurricanes in the Pacific.Fact is;both ships were reporting 30-40 foot waves, some " large" ones 50 ft.or more...........They are lakes of many moods-Ive seen Superior flat calm, and she can get into a rage, and sink huge ships like toys in a bathtub. When I go up that way every Thanksgiving,I try to make it to Whitefish Point(www.whitefishpointshipwreckmuseum.com) to pay my respects for the 29 lost that day at a memorial the sailors' family and friends have erected there. When you go there;you can just FEEL the history.......

These were taken this fall at the Great lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point near where Big Fitz went down.

I think God created nature to be as moody as a woman, whose moods can change in a moments notice! Anyway most men think so! So sad when ships go down as most or many on board go down with her! One time when my family was in Buffalo, NY, visiting my ex's Uncle and family, he took us fishing out on a small boat and the Lake was so large, I thought we were on the ocean and I got sick from the waves and the smell of worms and fish! We cooked the fish on the shore afterwards, but I wasn't too hungry! Me and boats don't mix! Hope you have a nice trip and enjoy everything while there! Ma Betty
