305 ground balance question

The manual states if the tone is low increase it, if the tone is high decrease it, my question is to what? something in the middle, or a constant tone that does not change when moveing the coil up and down? my soil is neutral, so is the factory pre-set at 6, ok for neutral soil ? any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Ideally silence, no sound. But that is not likely to happen over real ground. Over very neutral soil you may not notice much change as you adjust from one extreme setting to the other. Over moderate to severe ground generally you will have a solid loud tone when set to the extreme away from the GB point, and as you approach the GB point the volume gets softer and the tone begins to mix so that you hear a soft high & low tone. As you go past the GB point the tone changes to the opposite and will get louder and purer.

An easy way to get a feel for it is to set it to zero over a clean piece of ground, bob the coil up & down from 8 inches to one inch as you adjust fully up past the GB point. Then adjust back down to zero and note the reaction as you go past the GB point. If you have very neutral ground and are not getting much reaction then go find some asphalt(driveway or road) and practice over that.

Thanks very much, that makes it real clear with me, thats what i like about this forum, very knowlegable people willing to help.

Our ground is also very neutral, very low in minerals. I do an auto GB with my 705 but with my XT50 I have run the GB both ways to the extreme and have noticed no difference in depth in this neutral soil. I'd say if your ground is very low in minerals, it shouldn't make much difference at all. HH
