300 acre farm

springtime

New member
Hello folks,
This is my 1st post and I'll start by saying how much I enjoy and learn from this forum and you members. I have learned a great deal reading here and am putting the info to use as I can. I've had my mxt for about two months, Jeff's manual, and haven't made up my mind about additional coils. I'm struggling with the 950, BUT, getting the hang of it a little at a time. I have spent most of my time in my son':sadwalk:s spare lot. Somewhat trashy and the best thing I dug is a musket ball at about 10" in the center of the hole, and some clad. I got permission to detect on this 300 acre farm and I frankly don't know where to start. Around the house and the barn are off limits for the time being but will be OK in the fall. I need to know what direction I head when I step out of the car. Help!

Assuming it's an old farm, around the garden, water well, under big trees, plowed field, wind mill, creeks, mail box are just some that come to my mind.

pathways, roadways, out buildings, gardens (women stashed their money in gardens). fence lines, any fence post out of line (caches), base of large trees, tree limbs with a ring around it (old strings hanging down marked caches), orchards, pond bank, creek swimming hole, etc. etc. hope this helps HH

You might want to take a mower with you. Even in the fall you have to fight the stobs and laid over grass. Good luck!

if you are in the older part of the country get a big foot coil and cover the plowed feild you would be suprized what you would find my real luck has been digging the old out houses and i use a probe to find them they are very hi trash and a metal detector may find them as well they are at least 6 ft deep ive found to many treasures to list one being a DR:GREGORYS SCOTCH BITTERS from minneapolis crude aplaied top mint condition worth a small fortune today abandoned farms can be so trashy you may get bummed out also try sifting by some old trees ya sift dig a 6x6' x 12" deep you would be amazed me and my frend thor did and found a 1919 penny abuffalow nickle an1875 indian head penny and a silver dime and a big spear point all whith no metal detector and why ive not been back thear i do not know the coins whear deep wee took off at least 6" of sod lots of work

Springtime, I missed where you are located. If the ground is not too mineralized the 9.5 will work well in the open fields and away from the trashier areas. No large coil is going to work well in trash.

The lawn mower or any way to cut the grass is a good idea, the lower the grass the deeper the targets you will find. In the trash you will need a smaller coil. I've got a 5" excelerator I use in the worst trash with the MXT. I also use the 5.3 Whites on my Modified IDX. They work great.

I like to hunt in the relic mode, disc at 2, and trigger in the center position. I get a smooth threshold even in the + range. The low iron tone and higher good tone helps me find more targets in the trash. Rob

Rob, I'm in southeast Ny, Orange County, and no one has ever detected this property before. The owner or his folks have owned this place for a long time. I went out sunday AM for the first time and started around the house. could not even get a ground balance. Dug some junk over a two hpur period and left. I looked up the hill out into the pasture and that's where I'm goin next.

I run my MXT in the relic mode, disc at 2 and find the unit a lot more stable in relic. I've been readin a lot about the Accelerator units, definetly got me interested. I was thinking about the white 5.3 or the 4X6, but I will keep reading before I make up my mind.

Well I don't have the 5.3 for the MXT because I already had the 5" but the 5.3 really has alot of fans. It really works well on my IDX.

Thanks everybody for the info! So help me when I got to the farm, I stood just outside the vehicle with the MXT and it was just quivering. I didn't know which way to go, and that MXT just wanted to get it's nose to the ground and start baying. I'm thinkin revolutionary war relics and that kinda makes the whole place a target. Let's see when I find the 1st button or buckle. Thanks again, big help.

If you're working in the autumn, beware. s you detect around old trees which is always a good idea, watch out for little holes in the ground. That's where yellow jackets live. this is from personal experiance and by the time they pour out from their hole, you might find a good bee sting on the top of your skull like I did. Also, deer ticks will still be out. I found this out the hard way when I was detecting around stone walls in RI and the next morning woke up and noticed hat a female deer tick nad attached itself to my left oblique and died in the process. We don't want to get Lyme disease!
