$300.00 dollar tesoro??

Hi all, I have a question. One of my co-workers ask me about a metal detector for her husband. He is at $300.00 or less as he is just getting into the hobby and doesn't want to spend too much until he knows how much he will like the hobby. I have a e-trac and a tiger shark and after some research and watching youtube videos I think a Tesoro is definitely the way to go. In his price range I think either a compadre with maybe a pinpointer or a silver umax or a used Cibola. my question is what is the major differences between the three? What I mean is how much will you gain or loose between the three? Thanks all and HH.

if he is just getting ito the hobby i would say the Compadre, and a garrett pro pointer, & a lesche knife, if he decided he hated the hobby the compadre if in good condition would probably bring an easy 100 and the leach 25 and the pro pointer 80 and i would go with the small coil in the compadre as it will pinpoint better, & the compadre will probably pay for itself in short order . thats what i would do , the pinpointed is critical because it will save you parks, & keep you from getting kicked out ,

The Cibola is a deeper unit than the others. It does have a few more knobs but it's kind if like an "idiot-proof" Vaquero. Definitely the best out of the ones mentioned.

If he's less tech-savvy, the Silver is a great balance of easy to use, and performance. The sensitivity knob can help a bit in trashy spots or bad ground.

The Compadre is the best bang for the buck, if starting out and on a budget! Since there's an 8" coil option now, he could cover area better than the 5.75" can. They're all good units so I guess it depends on how much he wants to learn. Hope that helps!

Compadre turn on and go with discrimination only.
Silver U has discriminate and sensitivity.

I like these two choices for general purpose and for the newbie to see what he likes. The Cibola is a good detector as well, but I think it runs a little hotter and is best situated with relic hunting.
Either The Compadre and Silver are good all around for relics, coin & Jewlery, etc. Just my thoughts.

Having owned and used all three, I think your idea of the Compadre/pinpointer combo is far and away the best idea.

Unless he plans to hunt open fields as a relic hunter right off the bat, he will probably be doing a lot of park and home site hunting like most beginners.

The Compadre is easy and fun to use, and that pinpointer (and get a good one, like the Porpointer) will give him every chance to see if he likes the hobby.

If not, he can recoup a good deal of his investment.

If he does like the hobby, he already has a pinpointer and a jewelry/tot-lot hunter/backup machine that he may never grow out of.

The silver and Cibola are great machines too, but if he does a lot of park hunting (as I suspect he will), he will appreciate the standard 5.75" coil and not having to shell out extra for a small coil as an accessory.

You can't go wrong with any of the aforementioned machines.
My choice would be a new Silver Umax, as it will afford your friend with a lifetime warranty and the ability to grow with additional coils, in addition to the benefits mentioned by others.
On the off chance your friend doesn't like the hobby (doubtful in light of your salesmanship and support!) advise him to stick with it at least until he's found 300 in clad. By then he will have found a bit a jewellery and se silver and you won't be able to pry the machine out of his hands.
At that point you will have the duty to advise him that no man can survive with just one Tesoro and he will soon be buying the other two! There will be no way to get the genie back in the bottle!

"idiot-proof " Vaquero. LOL

Buy the Silver and have fun...Not your game, resale value is about 85%............And this is why Tesoro will always remain simple...

Thanks for the answers everyone. After doing a little checking he might be able to get a used silver umax and a pro pointer. I'm thinking in the rare event he does not enjoy the hobby I would buy the detector from him:clapping:
