All,
Well I just finished my thirty days in the hole :) with the 505, some very interesting thoughts:

1) The learning curve for me was about 2 weeks and that is for someone who's never owned ANY metal detector, (hats off to Minelab) I

Hi Jeep,
I assume you are hitting all of the "public" places, i.e., schools, parks, etc. There are two keys to finding the good finds (silver coins, rings and so on.) #1 is research. Get some books about your area and find the places that used to be, but are no longer. Ghost towns, old fair grounds, picnic grounds, old military bases, pioneer camping grounds, and so on. #2-private property. This is harder, because you have to get the nerve up to approach a property owner and get permission. But, any yard over 50 years old (and I know there are plenty in Sacremento), can be a treasure trove of old coins and relics. Also, keep your eyes open for any place that is being torn down or where they might be tearning up sidewalks or streets. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your machine. Hang in there, keep working at it and you'll be successful.

Dave,
Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!!! I have done SOOO much research to the point of buying the 1965 map off eBay, scrubbing the historical sites and living on Google earth. I think the problem is multiplied by the fact that there is just so many people in California. The detectorists have hammered all the local spots as you suggest and the fact that the soil is so mineralized makes it hard to find deeper targets, think I'm going to look into an E-Trac I don't think the 505 is cutting it... I think you hit the nail on the head, private property is the key, now for permission here in Cali, almost impossible, people here are very strange about letting you on their property for anything, last time i asked for permission was to catch and release on a bass pond and got threatened with a call to the police and cussing in my face at the front door :( so a little gun shy about asking to dig holes in peoples yards LOL...

Well,
78 views and a reply from only one soul... hmm, interesting... guess not many folks here from Northern California, that or their ashamed to admit it  !!!
