3 years of using explorer and still confused

3 years i have used my explorer every chance i get and i like it a lot but one problem i have tried to get by and hit a wall every time is when i use the machine on say a trail or old field it works really good sounds are clear depth good id ok ,but when i get near old foundation holes from the late 1800 to early 1900 the machine makes everything sound the same as or close to silver coins sounds.i have found many ih pennies, a number of seated dimes and a few British coppers, but never once a silver quarter or anything silver when close to the actual cellar of the home, why? after all this time i do not believe that there just not there, it must be rusty nails or some other common debris that sounds like silver coin signals, but thats all i hear is high tones every few inches, there obviously not all coins, so how can i get these signals cleaned up? iron mask wont eliminate them at all because there high tones, the sensitivity doesn't seem to have any affect in man or auto,I've tried the settings for coins and other presets and some home made programs but nothing helps. maybe my hearings bad? I've tried different coils, but that only separates sounds more but not eliminate them. i had one problem i fixed it seems the machine loves rocks and throws a 00 31 signal constantly SO i edit it out but the other chatter i hear is definitely stopping me from good finds. my normal settings are ferrous sounds, gain7, vol6, sens manual 24, fast on, deep on, audio normal, and i use a custom program that blocks out about 1/8 out the left screen and a dot at 00 31 to block out that problem signal from before. thinking about a whites or fisher maybe it will help?

It sounds like you know the detector fairly well!! I will say if a quarter or such isn't there you cant make it appear in the ground however, I will say you need to stay poss. about the whole thing cause I will tell you they are out there!!! Just go slow and it will come..

Get a smaller coil and UNBLOCK 00-31 !!!!!!!
you are killing half of your quarter hit Plus you are running in Manual sens OR SEMI -AUTO ????? SEMI-IS BEST IN THESE TYPE PLACES NO FALSING OR AT LEAST A LOT LESS ON HOT ROCKS OR IRON!Just my 2 bit's worth!! See if you dont find some quaters like that! H.H.(GOLDDIGGER)J.W.

about the 00 31 has any one else had this problem of constant falsing? i believe it comes from rocks but it overwhelms my ears,i have to block it out way to much chatter. i thought 00 31 was nothing as far as id? i do have a small excelerator hockey puck coil i should try but i worry about depth.

Try the smller coil what can it hurt. From what you say your not getting anything right now. The small coil should get enough depth.

From the sounds you're waisting time and getting frustrated.
Open your explorer up to all metal in iron mask. Bare with me for a moment.
Ferrous sounds, Gain at 6, Variability at 9, Deep on Fast off.
Sens. 2 clicks down from the erratic point.
Gain at six will make your silver signals a little softer than the big high pitched iron signals.
Variability at 9 will give enough separation to tell Hot rocks and cut nails from coins without even looking.
Fast and deep both on serves no purpose. It garble the nice tones of the Explorer.
Sens. 2 clicks down from erratic will keep both the XSII and specially the SE a little quieter around trashy areas like cellar holes. Oh, and run your threshold tone at just audible. This will ensure you don't miss any weaker signals.
If you're patient and concentrate on the higher tones you will be able to pick through most of the trash and get that occasional silver.

ok sounds good i will put the 5" excelerator coil on also as i havent given much use.the deep on /fast off nhbob sugested is interesting, its seems like everone uses both on, but i did find that deep on fast off was better but need some more time trying it out.

that was it, semi auto solved the problem i guess i was getting a lot of falsing, now the detector acts different, just about all the signals are something worth digging even it it just a copper lantern part.it also help to turn fast off ,i go slow anyway so it helped clear up the readings. the larger coil works just as good as the small one now, only thing because i did not find any deep targets im not sure if semi auto has taken away any depth but i know i will come out ahead being able to cover a lot more ground now with more accuracy.as far as the 00/31 thing that problem has also just about dissapaired unless im right on top of a visable rock which is easy to tell. its funny how 3 years of frustration ended with one adjustment of semi auto that i was told is not as good as running manual.thanks to all that posted.
