3" x 7" Coil On The Infinium Snags A Ring In The Woods After Work Today :hot:

I put the 3" x 7" coil on the Infinium after work and headed to the woods to see if I could squeeze a little luck today. As you can see, there is a little snow on the ground, left over from an earlier snowfall this week. The temperature got up to around zero, which is actually quite pleasant for this time of year. It is not unusual for the temperature to drop to -30C at the end of November, So I will take my blessings while I can. :)

I was pretty well only digging the low-high signals, which include both silver and copper along with some rusted iron. I left several pieces of iron behind, but saved these targets. My first target was a clad dime, my second a ring and finally a penny. Using the small coil allowed me to get a better sense of the size of the target compared to the 8" mono coil or my 10" x 14" DD coil. I only managed to squeeze in an hours hunt, as the days are getting very short at this time of year in Edmonton.

I was very surprised to get a ring in the woods, which is a rare find indeed. Here's a pic of it. There are no stamps on it, and I suspect that it is gold plated. But, a ring is a ring is a ring, is a ring...... And that's my second ring from the woods this week.

As previously mentioned, the days are getting shorter at this time of year. After an hour or so in the woods, the sun set and I was again left in the woods in the dark, a great place to be anytime. :)

That looks like a Tiger eye John. To bad it's plated. That's how the one I found today looked. Notched one notch to the right of nickle. Looks like gold plate with light pitting. A ring is a ring, right Rosco:thumbup:

Zero c isn't too bad. Below that I don't see how you could dig in the soil.
I have found one ring in the woods. Of course it was a tropical jungle compared to where you are. Hey, no mosquitoes, no gators, no scorpions, no snakes,no sweat.

I can dig under the leaves in much colder temperatures. Its usualy dry, and there is still some cellular activity going on with the organic stuff producing a little warmth. Last year it rained so much, then got real cold. The saturated ground froze down to a good 12 inches. But we had so much snow that you couldn't detect anyways. And you are right, no mosquitoes, gaters, snakes etc. but there are homeless people living there stoned to fight off the cold. Even today, just as the sun was setting, some guy was yelling at me. The was my "Q" to leave.

It is hard for me to believe that homeless could even survive there.
In Fl. you could find homeless anywhere. It was never safe after dark. Even in the middle of the forest. That was the easiest place for them to rob you. Nobody around. To go into the forest without a gun was stupid.
In the forest around here I am the baddest thing. Nothing to fear. Sure there are bear, a few mountain loin, but there is so much small game, they have nothing to do with me. The thing that worry me the most......SKUNKS!!! They are everywhere!!

This is one of the things that I find so fascinating about metal detecting. What are the chances that the ring in question would ever enter the detection range of your Infinium? Now add to that the fact that it was lost in a tangle of undergrowth in the woods and that its a ring. What caused it to slip off someones finger? What were they doing there in the first place? It still amazes me.

Personally, I am not a fan of hunting in the woods. I've tried it a few times and once I found a Standing Liberty Quarter near a fallen down stone fence in the middle of nowhere. I imagine a lot of hunters have crossed there in the past. Next time you get a coin in change look at it and imagine some detectorist finding it in 80 years when have long since passed on.

I often think the amazing thing about the hobby is not how many interesting thing we recover from the ground, but that we find anything interesting at al.

Maybe I'm thinking too much! Cool ring. Great photos as always.

The shovel I use in fields (like farmers fields not ball fields), in the woods, and at the beach is sharp as hell. In fact I sliced a good pair of jeans and my thigh by not paying attention. I generally feel safe when I have it but I haven't really considered an angy mob.

I also can't believe there are people living in the woods in Alberta during the winter. Do they lose much?

My little burgh has become overrun with illegals in the past year. They found 6 of them living in the pack of a panel truck in a parking lot by the public beach. They live 10 or 12 to a one bedroom apartment. I have also met a few "street" people who have asked for change. I always laugh and say you don't want the change I have.

Sad times we live in. It can happen anywhere.
