3 x 18" widescan??

WV62

Well-known member
I have heard very little about the 3x18 widescan coil. I have been thanking about adding one to my Tejon collection. I am interested in anything that gives an idea as to what to expect out of this coil.

Pinpointing
Depth
Sensitivity to jewelry
Anything else I should know??

Thanks

Howdy Ron. I added the CSC to my Silver uMax back around December (was a gift from my family) and I don't think I have taken it off since then, lol. My opinion follows, in regards to using it on my Silver....

Love it! Coverage is fantastic! You do lose some depth... I get a quarter around the 5 inch mark. Good enough for me. Lol

Pinpointing is Spot on!!! I get a hit... I simply wiggle it and move it backwards, and it pinpoints right off the tip!

It is "different", for me anyways, having been used to both my round coils on my Compadre and Silver... but I really like it!

It does scan from front to back, so again, lots of coverage... I "think" closer to the center of the "coil" it does go a bit deeper, can't say for sure.... but I am very satisfied. This is a fun coil to really allow coverage, without perhaps the greatest depth, but as I am jewelry hunter mostly... I am more that ok with the depth.

Also, will feel "funny" to swing at first, lol, because it is different. But I easily got used to it. Of course it's a bit heavier than my 8inch round coil... but, for me, was/is not a big deal.

Having used this now for several months, I find that its the "smaller"/"quieter" hits that usually end up being coin/ring etc... at the 4-5 inch mark... these "subtle" types of hits, with my old coil, I may not have always dug... but with this coil, on my machine, its ends up being a good target, so don't get fooled by thinking the quiet hits are small foil lol.

Although my Silver uMax was NOT balanced/tuned for this coil, it's has not been noisy or falsing, etc.... although Tesoro did recommend that I send in my Silver uMax and the coil and they would be happy to tune it for the coil... I ended up not doing that, seems to work fine and dandy... of course sometimes I wonder if it may even be deeper with having them tune it... lol, but again, i am satisfied the way it is. I set my Sensitivity, typically right up to max, and it has worked great in my parks etc. I usually hunt at MAX and in ALL METAL (again, am using a Silver uMax) and use MIN DISC to check the target, if it sounds the same, it gets dug, period. has worked out well for me. It has found small earrings and the such... actually I was/am quite surprised at the sensitivity, provided you "listen" and don't walk from those quieter hits.

I did just acquire a nice like new Bandido II uMax... will probably try it on that machine as well, as I can tune it on that machine... have no idea if the depth will be better or not.

Sooooo, all in all, even if it was not a gift, I'd buy this coil again in a heartbeat... its been a lot of fun and has paid for itself already several times over... but thats not why we all hunt, lol, its the fun of it. And I love it on the Silver. More than satisfied.

Hope that helps, there are others who experiences may vary etc... but, thats my .02 cents worth. Lol.

Good luck with whatever you do. If you have any other questions and think I could help you out, just let me know.

Take care.

Ron

AZWIP,

Thanks, lots of good info there.

The coil sounds like it was made to find the newer coins and jewelry, just what I need. Now I need to figure out a way to get one.

Thanks again,

Ron

On the Tejon it feels better balanced than it does on the lighter units. I used it on the Cibola and found that set up nose heavy. Not bad balance wise on the Tejon. It's specialty is finding not real deep targets in not real trashy areas by covering a lot of area quickly. Can cover ground at a good pace but don't sweep the coil too fast ... I think you have had the Tejon long enough to know what it likes for coil sweep speeds. Picks up pretty small foil and jewelry just fine. In mild ground, coins are readily hit up to 6 inches.

Pinpoint, like AZWIP says, is right off the end. I use either end, front or back, depending on which end I more quickly find as I'm locating target.

Mine paid for itself about a month after getting it on it's first beach trip with a gold ring in the dry sand.
Cheers,
tvr

hi ron,

I'll second the words of AZWIP above. I use the cleansweep on the silver uMax.
When I purchased the uMax the cleansweep was on it, and its stayed on., I use the cleansweep for coin park/oval hunting.
I also find its max depth around 5" mark, but thats good, because I use it on sports fields.
The pinpointing(as described above) is great, no issues. Was out hunting today, and the oval had just been mowed, so I rested
the cleansweep on the level grass, and scanned that way. Picked up $20 AU in a few hours. targets were 1" - 4"
in the section I hunted. highly recommend this coil to park/oval hunters who want to cherry pick from the top levels.

cheers -b

Guys, thanks for the info I just posted my extra coils trying to get enough cash to buy one.

Thanks again,

I use the 3x18 on my Vaquero. As previously mentioned not very deep 4"-5" , but anything under 5" is yours for the taking. My Vaq. had some balance issues with the coil installed the right way( long end forward) so I just reversed it ( short end forward) and now I love it. Happy hunting.

Humble Hunter,
If that works for you that is what counts, good thinking. Maybe you have just shared a tip for others think about.

I have just started looking for one of these coils for my Tejon and so far I am not having much luck. Anybody out there know a good place to try and find one?
