Well the sand is rolling back in with every tide, worked the hump ocean side on low tide looking for returning goodies one 10K and plenty of targets
Each picture is a roundup from each day Thursday/Friday/Saturday
I have heard dozens of ideas on the copper shards are in the first picture over the years anyone know what they really are? found on most of the Delaware beaches!

WTG on the Gold!! I heard things were finally looking good!! Good Luck on your Next outing!!

Good to see you got some gold for your efforts garry... years ago an older woman on the beach there told me those pieces of distorted brass were part of a ship that washed ashore ..when i took them home and showed them to my father he said they were pieces of exploded ordinance ...he did a tour of duty in the army in the late 40s has seen his fair share of schrapnel... the thin pieces with small holes drilled thru them allegedly are part of the timers....i imagine most of this is from practice however with the coastal towers lining the beach they obviously though there was a threat...and prior to anti submarine warfare im sure if they thought there was anything unusual spotted out there the the bullets and shells would fly...shoot 1st ask questions later, but this is just one of the dozen theorys..but its the one that makes most sense to me... ithink that beach is one of the main reasons that they now screen the replenishment sand ....7 or 8 years ago the local govt was practically begging detectorists to come to the beach as a means of cleaning that junk out ot there...i wonder how many people cut there hands or feet while playing in the sand.... happy hunting...

I find lots of those small pieces that sound so danged good that I have to dig them just to be sure. I see that you also dig up a lot of those old 50 caliber armor piercing bullets. I have even found some of the shell casings also. They are pumped onto the beach when they do the re-nourishment. Congrats on the Gold.

No doubt the towers where armed with 50Cals and anything out of the ordinary got riddled with those huge bullets and my understanding is there was no shortage of shooting that went on from the towers back during the war. I sure would not have wanted to go fishing in a small boat off the beach in those days :look:
The exploded ordnance has always made sense and the difference in the rounds with holes and the squares with scored lines could be explained as exploded mines of sorts. It is a real workout looting :detecting: Delaware beaches with so many good sounding targets after 3 days of hunting you begin to wish for :pulltab: over the shards of ordinances.
Headed down tomorrow to loot a bit more look for Camo and the blue excal I am deer hunting mornings and evening and looting the beach in between, come say hello :)

Congratulations! Nice finds

Definitely ordinance,it comes out of our local beaches often.I live in England and detect two beaches that were used in the Second World War as practice for the d day landings as they are similar to those in Normandy.American forces used to practice there regularly and some of the concrete structures they built are still visible in the dunes.
There is even a road running behind one of the beaches that is still called the American road.Frightening really looking at those shards of metal......these would be flying through the air as fast as a bullet....it's no wonder many soldiers lost limbs and suffered dreadful injuries.

Nice find on the Gold and Coins. These shells were found in (1 ) day, I am thinning them out ( if its possible ) May 2015
