3 Little Indians...

Erik

New member
Hi, Got out for a few hours last night and was able to pull three more IH's from the park. One is in pretty good shape, the other two are noticeably worn. They are 1905, 1881, and 18xx. They look better in person than the scans show (perhaps I should have photographed them). I also found an interesting cast button and a whatzit. It has 7 {delta char or triangle} 122 engraved on it.....any ideas???

Oddly enough I only dug one wheatie, so this is the first time I have found more IH cents than wheaties!

Three little Indians in a row are pretty fair finds if I must say and the button appears to be from the same era. Your whatzit appears to be part of an old door lock assembly but I could be wrong. Anyway nice hunting again.

The scan makes it look a lot worse than it really is. It's been worn quite smooth and the date has been obliterated, but the indian head can still be clearly seen. The scan makes it look almost like a blank disc.

It's almost as fun finding a really well worn coin as a near mint one (unless one is in it for the value) since the worn coin has seen so much history and use, then eventually lost for years, only to be finally found again and admired as part of a collection.

Thanks for your kind comments JB! For me 3 indians is a good day - as I don't come across too many of them for some reason. I'm happy with the 4 I found in the two days. The button is interesting....see the recess for the thread and the "nub" on the back - I wonder what that's for. I also thought that the whatzit might have been part of a lock. The font they used for the numerals appears to be older, but I suppose the piece itself is not that old in and of itself.

Best, Erik

...in parks. They are usually all chewed up. Don't get me wrong I'll take an Indian when I can get it but I prefer home steads. I have pulled a few good looking Indian heads outta parks but most all my nice Indians come from homes or church/school lots.
Congrats on you finds!! Jim

be any worse if they're in the soil in a park vs. in the soil of a homestead or church? Seems to me it's the chemistry in the soil that's affecting them and I'm not sure why it would be any different in a park than anywhere else.

I would think that a park would have used more fertilizers than the normal homeowner would put on and in the ground taking its toll on the coppers but only my guess...Nice finds & HH

ANY INDIAN IS A GOOD FIND Erik.I have found several of the whatzits that you found .I belive it is some sort of press type.If you look close you will find a letter on the edge .

Hi Ben, Thanks VERY much for your post! Yes, indeed, it does have what appears to be the letter "h" or maybe it's a "4" on the side. That's very interesting....any idea what sort of machine they came from or how old they are? Best, Erik

the salt from the roads that gets brought into the parks on the bottom of people's feet. I don't see them fertilizing the grass in the park very often - sure is not nice looking grass.
