Yessir, it has been done, the result with the softwar change is called the Xterra 70. Works great as long as the batteries are making contact.

I was given the 3khz coil by mistake when I purchased my detector and it did not work. When powered up the display showed a CI, which meant (coil incompatable). It was exchanged for the high frequenzy coil which does work on the X-terra 50.
