3 Explorer questions

I'm getting closer to the point of being able to afford an Explorer, and thought I'd try to get a bit of info.
1) Having recently realized how significant the features the XS has over the S, how many people actually use an S? Considering the savings in purchasing the S aren't that great, it seems it'd be better for Minelab to manufacture only the XS, and in the process maybe they'd be able to lower it's cost even just a bit?
2) At what serial number did they start making Explorers with the strengthened materials? Or is there an easier way to tell?
3) I've read that some people who've had the case replaced with the stronger setup, have run into a problem with the upper shaft falling out. Consequently, has this also been a problem with any of the newer more durable factory units?
Thanks, and I hope to be reporting some great Explorer finds before too long.

Hi There,
It is interesting to note that not all of the Explorer users have had these troubles.
Is it possible that user handling is part of the problem?
Lets see others comments.
happy Hunting,
Jerry.

User has very little to do with any of the problems that have occured from the start with the Explorer. They are strictly factory related mistakes. I'm sure 99.99% of all users will agree with me.

More likely the ones with no cracking dont use their machines much or have trouble seeing them because of bad sight . I have personally pointed out the cracks with two machines that the owners said had no cracks!!!

I am on my 3rd Explorer XS as i use them for a while and sell as my demo. The first one I had no problems with cracking after 5 months or shaft falling out, Second one after a month seen some small cracks at the pin, but never got worst after 6 months or did the shaft fall out or come loose. Now the one I have now is the newer version with the strenghten housing and it seems like the cam lock is tighter than the other 2 to lock down so it is holding the shaft tight.
On the one i have now I have around 40 hours on it and everything is fine. The one I just sold to a guy said that his shaft had fell out, but he was using the WOT coil and had been bumping a few trees once in a while with the coil, so that may be why with the weight and the shock of it hitting the trees and other objects. Now he has the shaft taped to help it from comming loose while swinging the loop.
I dont think everyone is having a problem with the shaft comming loose or falling out, but the cracking was a problem on the older ones. Out of 9 of the Explorers in my area only one has had the shaft fall out and that was because of the WOT and the hitting object while swinging the loop as that shock on the housing where the shaft come in is great.

If the shaft isn't slid into the control housing the full 2 inches then I can see a good reason for the shaft falling out. I don't see any cracks in the housing of my machine, but that might be my eyesight and a poor magnifing device.

Pardon the blank post. I probably baby my explorer more than most, to the point of armoralling the grip after every use and going over the whole detector with auto spray wax, removing the coil cover etc. I never use it in the woods or bang the coil on anything either. The point is I still am getting the cracks around the upper pin and the armrest broke, which by the way Mark at Minelab promptly sent me a new one free of charge. Minelab is great that way. What I'm getting at is I don't care how carefully you treat it , it'll crack and break anyway. It's a great machine, the electronics are fantastic, it's just not well built. Just my two cents worth. i've had my explorer since it first came out and i did have cracks on the housing after about a month but thats all. never broke an arm rest yet and im in the woods,in parks, everywhere.i've used all the coils and never had one fall out. what i did when it started cracking and the shaft felt alittle loose was to wrap one layer of electical tape two inches down the shaft and insert in into the control box. the shaft is rock solid and id dont even use the cam lock and with alittle tug i can remove it. i really dont see a reason to send it in to the shop for repairs.

Just like I said about the coil falling out of my explorer in the post i wrote. It wont do it with the stealth x8 coil in it just with the stock 10 coil so how can this be operator mistake when it want do it on one but the other.

my explorer only gets washed when i get caught in the rain. i had my cuff break first month and the girl who answered the phone hooked me up no problem. headphone female jack went out and they asked me to send only the handle assembly when it return i put my upper shaft in and then came the cracks i've heard so much about. what do they do when you return it send you a whole new handle assembly? hey Coinshooter just kidding about the armour all.

Hey Mike, I'm not sure what they send you back when you send in for cracks. I'm waiting till winter to send mine in. I think you get a whole new casing. I just love Armourall. Do my car tires all the time to. I'm going to start drinking the stuff pretty soon!!! HH-Coinshooter65.

My XS has the new housing. Everything is fine when using the 8" loop. The heavier 10" coil makes the upper shaft flex slightly and work its way out of the housing as I swing the detector. I insert the shaft all the way, so its another factory design problem. To prevent another dropout and possibe damage I tied the upper rod to the battery housing with a strap (didn't have any baling wire).
