3 cent nickels read what?

This Nickel 3 cent reads 3 to 6 I. D. tops on the Equinox, as you can see its a dug example that is not worn. I have to admit it was found by an eTrac and it read 12-03 before and after it was dug. That is a huge difference from the 9 being reported here. Just curious are your 9 coins non dug specimen's? I guess the real point here is don't get hung up on the numbers game as it is an audio first based decision to dig machine. jmo Oh by the way Dale walked past this target once only to back track 10 feet and pillage this beauty from one of my sites, congrats again ole buddy :twodetecting:

Thanks Steve. I am wondering if its surface pitting or just different composition in the coins:shrug:

This is interesting. The nickel 3 cent pieces are .750 copper and .250 nickel, the same as the 5 cent nickels. I’ve scanned some pocket change nickels along with dug corroded nickels, they all are consistent 12 or 13 reading. The 3 center being smaller, in size and mass, accounts for the lower reading than the 5 cent nickel. But curious as to why does the corrosion affects the 3 cent but doesn’t seem to affect the reading of the 5 cent? The only major difference is in total surface area and mass compared to the amount of corrosion. Anyway, in the detecting process why doesn’t matter. If the corroded 3 cent hits in the 3-6 range that is what we would need to remember. I admit, I can get hung up on ‘why does this happen’ too much. Lol

Perhaps........ the bleeding of the copper changed the metal ratio?

Nickel also can be very ferromagnetic.....that magnetic property perhaps when bleeding/corrosion occurs reduces its reading? Nickel is pretty non corrosive and is used in metals like SS and we see it of course on rings....... but some metals react to each other when introduced to minerals, salt and moisture.

Well, I get a "zinger" in once in awhile! :beers:......but only because you're a great friend & take me to your well researched spots! As Jeff says......don't get hung up on numbers ...........there are too many variables!

My "dug" 3-cent nickel would occasionally bounce between 5 - 7. But once I got "tuned into it", it reads a fairly consistent 6 using the stock coil on my 800. As a comparison, mine is more toasted than Dale's. For those of you keeping score at home....my dug 3-cent silver reads a strong 16. But as someone who learned to hunt "by ear", I don't get hung up on the numbers either. HH Randy

Thanks Randy, I wonder if this is the lowest reading American coin. A one dollar gold piece might be lower.
