The BFO was a one tube affair, and I used a tube type portable radio.Had those batteries hanging like bricks on either side of me..Was lucky that coins were so darn plentiful,otherwise batteries would have put an end to that. May have built the same one, used a CK722 transistor, later in about 66 to 67, Popular Electronics had a schematic. built one worked fine on coins, sold it to someone in Alton Ill,Was a shielded copper coil.black plastic box, speaker on top, white plastic around speaker..What beaches did you work? I used to see beach cleaners that scooped up everything in the sand including glass. Am wondering if you added a Faraday shield to the "V" coil,if you couldn't fool the circuit into thinking everything is just shifted over a bit.. A loss of some depth, maybe no falsing.
