2nd Update ...Grey Ghost Orig

I went out again this afternoon, coin shooting, for a couple of hours. I'm liking the Grey Ghost Orininals a "little" better but have noticed another anoyance! They are so "air tight" around my ears they are causing ear drum pressure. I found myself having to pull them away from my ears, momentarily, every few minutes to relieve pressure. Each ear cup needs a pressure releaf valve. Does anyone else have similar problem or am I the only weirdo? When I quit wiening and complaining you better check me out and see if I'm stealing something! Just no pleasing this old fart! Ron

Ron, do you belong to local metal detecting club?
If there is one in the area, if you are not already a member, contact them and see if any of them have other brands that you could try before you buy. They are expensive and I don't think you can afford to keep buying until you find a pair you like.
This is one of the problems with internet orders. I prefer to support my local dealer whenever I can. It is worth something to me to be able to touch and feel an item before I buy. You cannot always rely on specification sheets and internet research, no matter how well it is done.
If you know what you want and your local dealer, if you have one, does not have it you could still have him order it for you. At least then, if you do not like it, he has a better chance of selling it than you do and he can still make a profit because he can get it at dealer cost.
All that said and done, I read many posts about ear phones and decided to get the Sunray Pro model. My dealer did not have it so he ordered it for me. I tried them and liked them and have been using them ever since. Sometimes a middle man does earn his share.
Enough philosophizing. That is one of the problems you guys have with us old geezers. We have an opinion about most everything and are usually happy to share it with others.

Here in Rapid City, S.D. we only had four metal detector dealers and one of those went out of business last week. Two of the last three only had cheepies, which I bought when I first purchased my MXT a month ago. There is a Fisher dealer that I have to talk to, across town, to see if he has quality headphones. The cheepies were $16.50, dual volumn controls, stero-mono switch with "thin" ear pads. My ears touch the speaker grills and very little outside sound proofing. But that being said at 8 ohm's they sounded pretty good to me. Just wish I could find some decent ear pads for them and I believe I would like the cheepies just fine! I will probably keep the Grey Ghosts and drill a tiny little hole in the bottom of each ear cup to releive the air pressure problem. I'm not too interested in club activities and all the socializing. Too much Yak Yak and not enough Zip Zip!

"NOW" I like em!! I drilled a small hole in each ear cup and that solved the problem of too much air pressure on my ear drums! Went out this morning and did'nt have any problems other than they are still making my ears sweat. I think I get a back pack air conditioner with a hose going to each ear cup and one circular hose to go around my neck and I'll be all set! Ron

Hey Ron ,i saw some covers that go over the ear cups. I think they are made of cotton and have elastic. Good for winter and for sweat. Can`t remember what website ,but i was looking at headphones and saw them. Just a thought.

My ear pads also have a hole in the bottom which only expelled air from the pad itself. After making the small holes, and putting them on my head, I tested for air coming out of the new holes by applying pressure. Air would come out the holes! It did releive my ear drum pressure and made them comfortable. If anyone else is having the same problem I encourage them to try it! It won't hurt the earphones as long as you only drill "just" through the ear cup and not damage any internal components.

I looked at the web site of Dixie Metal detectors and only found the cotton over cover for the ear pads unless I just overlooked them. I'm looking for new ear pads to go on my cheepie headphone and can use them as a backup or on my Garrett GTA Ultra. If you guys see any I would appreciate you letting me know. Thanks Ron
