Lost Treasure magazine (March 2007) has a brief article about detecting in the Islands with websites. Basically if it is American owned then no metal detecting.....archeological preservation.

Got there with detector in hand and read on a sign that said "No Metal Detecting. Went on the beach with all my friends and asked the life guard why you couldn't detect. He said you can detect but you have to do it after 5:00 P.M. when the life guards are off duty. I did manage to detect for 1 and 1/2 hours before it got dark. The cabbie didn't want to be out there after dark so we were at his mercy. I have heard of some really awesome jewelry found there. Also did you notice all the gold that the people wear that live on the island. I think they wear everything they own everytime they go out. Anyway the taxi cab driver said you don't want to be out after dark it isn't safe. If I had a hotel close to megan's bay I would go out really early in the a.m. or at night if someone was with me.
