2nd Silver and its BIG!

Im so excited, finally got my second silver. Decided to try a different spot that has a little more age, an old school/ballpark that dates to about 1916. The school was no longer used after 75 and has since been remodeled and turned into a community building. The old ball park has been kept up and is still currently used for little league and summer corec softball tournaments. There was lots of targets, nobody really does much detecting around here so there is a ton of clad and shallow pull tab targets, fair amount of can slaw also from the corec tournament drunks. Wasnt finding much on the field itself so decided to hit the 3rd base side area where people have sat in lawn chairs and such. After digging tons of shallow clad and nothing old i got a good hit, honestly it didnt sound much different to me then a clad dime but im sure with some experience i may be able to tell it apart, i did notice however the crosshairs seemed to be pegged to the low ferrous (Right) edge of the smartscreen instead of being a couple spots over like on the clad. About 5 inches down and i see it laying flat and i got this huge grin on my face, it was obvious it was silver and i could see that it was large. I dont know a ton about coins but i think its a 45 walking half. I am stoked as the only other silver i have found was the 60 rosie about a month ago. I am going to start hitting this area most of the time for now instead of the local fairgrounds. One question i have tho, i seem to have a hard time pinpointing shallow clad. I can pinpoint a coin thats down say 4 inches way easier then one thats on the surface or just under the grass roots. I wonder if the fact that the ground is so wet from the melting snow isnt part of it. It seemed like shallow clad was just blowing my eardrums off, the unit seemed to be very chattery even in semi auto sens. Thanks for looking , and slowly i will get the hang of this machine. Thanks, Sam

Sam,

It can indeed be tough to pinpoint shallow clad sometimes; the Pro coil will sometimes sense a shallow coin with the outer rim of the coil, and not just the center -- so sometimes you think the CENTER of your coil is over the coin, and it's actually the outer rim of the coil. When the coins are a bit deeper, the outer edge of the coil does not pick up the coin, only the center of the coil -- and thus it's much easier to pinpoint.

Congrats on the BIG silver; she's a beauty!

Something you can try on the shallow coin is to leave the detector in the search mode and back the coil away from the signal and then slowly move forward until you just start to pick up the signal, the target should now be at the front edge of the coil. You can practice this with just laying a coin on the ground.

Nice silver honker !! Looks like a winning spot !!

Thanks everyone for the nice words, i am hoping to get back out there today or tomorrow

Nnice coin - I bet there will be more to follow. For shallow coins, you may want to try using your pinpointer to find them. I do this and it saves a lot of time. HH

Thanks everyone, and yes i have found if its shallow i just grab the sunray and run it across the top of the ground, i even noticed tho that it seems to be pretty HOT around the edges especially when the ground is damp.

Nice coin -- and a heck of a coin for your second silver!

On pinpointing surface coins, just lift the coil up about 4-6 inches. Works great. :)
