2nd night of the Lucky Squirrel

Aurium

New member
Well I hope you guys don't mind my squirrel analogy, because I'm feeling like a blind squirrel, and also feeling lucky because the
field that I found the ring in is now turning in some silver.. :wiggle: (and the happy dance is in full force)

I found the 50 cent piece at about 3 inches, read as a quarter so I was thinking great..another clad quarter. (woe is me right?)
and out pops this beautiful 1943 standing liberty. It's only the second one I've ever found personally, so I was pretty happy to see it.

Soo walking about 40-50 feet further I got a very intermittent signal penny-dime type at about 5 inches down. And it was strong at 22.4 and 2.5
a little stronger at the 2.5 so I decided to dig it, and see what's up. Yup another silver..woot..1943 merc. (Merc's are one of my favorite coins)

Then on another leg of my grid I hit a pretty good quarter signal and dug the memorial token, for Operation Northern Watch, looks like a military commemorative for Incirlik Turkey. It was still in the leather pouch which is under the token in the picture.

All in all a great weekend of hunting, and finds!!

oh..and my advice to others.. is Grid the fields, go slow (very slow) dig the iffies, and maybe you're in for a nice surprise.

(all found tonight in HiPro, and the D2)

Excellent finds Aurium,

I've only found one 50 cent piece,a 1952 at 5" and banged hard with a vdi of 91. At first didn't believe it but when she popped out OOOOHH YEAH!!

Any ideas on the date of the commemorative?
Keep up the good work..HH.:detecting:

The commemorative, has no date on it, I've checked it, but not researched it. I doubt it's very old but I'm no expert on dating that kind of thing. I say (guess) it's probably something from the last 10 years or so. I've never found a franklin 50 cent piece.. but so far this year I've found 3 clad 50 cent pieces, and now the silver 50 cent piece.
The V3 with a little tenacity, and a little research can turn in some great finds. (that or have the luck of a blind squirrel)

Nice finds. You can never go too slow or cover an area too many times. I just got back from a hunt. I found a large cent and silver half last time and we decided to go back there again. This time my partner got 2 wheats in the same area. I then went over it again and got a silver quarter, Indian and 3 more wheates. It just takes an inch to miss a deeper target. Rob

Great find I love that standing liberty half, I found one around 1978 with a whites 5000d about 5" down. That same day in same school yard found 9 silver Rosie's and 4 Merck's. That was when there was less trash and the silver was everywhere.

Yes. my first standing liberty was with my Whites 6000 di/pro, found an old sledding hill and happened to run across it. Had a lot more luck that day, and it happened to be my only find that time out. (must have been close to 15 years ago)

I still really like the di/pro, and I was using it a lot last year. (this year with the new V3.I'm just getting out a lot more) Probably because it's like having a magic wand. Finding coins for me is like an addiction, best part of it though is that I get a little jingle in my pouch for a little bit of hoop swinging.
