2nd MD--complement to Sovereign--recommendations? (and/or upgrade to GT?)

BlackX

I got a bit of a holiday bonus and am thinking of getting a 2nd detector (and/or upgrading to a GT). I'm currently using an XS2-Pro w/ 8"(?) coil, SunRay probe, homemade meter (hardwired into the coil line). Wondering what other folks recommendations would be.

One reason for thinking of a complement to the Sovereign is how slow one has to scan the ground with the Sov to be effective. (Any tips for fast scans using the Sov? How much depth is lost?) I was thinking that a detector, preferably light, that was able to cover a lot of ground to relatively-effective depth could be quite helpful at times.

As for the aspect of upgrading to a GT: How much difference is there with the GT vs an XS2-Pro? How much difference between the 10" Tornado and the 8" BBS? (And does a SunRay probe for the XS2-Pro work on the GT? Coils interchangable?)

If helpful, while I dream of undiscovered cellar holes, most of my detecting is in greater suburban Boston and almost all, if not all locations I've found/detect have been hit pretty hard by others. For instance, in a year of detecting w/ the Sov, silver seems to be fairly illusive: the non-clad I've found has been: one undetermined (Hibernia?) large cent, a 17?7 Charles III half-reale (shallow), large-cent-sized copper slug, 1850s half-cent, 2-3 IH, about 150 wheaties, and in silver only a '44 quarter and about 10 dimes (all but one ranging from '41-'46 (I seem to have a spike in wheaties around WWII as well--still trying to figure out why I have such a spike around WWII)).

I have a fair amount of ignorance as to the range of quality detectors made but some of the different things crossing my mind are a Whites XLT, Tesoro Cortes, Minelab Explorer (but has the same slow/weight issue as Sov--but it would be nice to have more info and control than the Sov gives (I can't understand why cents, dimes, & quarters all have to read all effectively the same (yes, _on occasion_ I can tell the diff*)--though perhaps an Explorer would be a good alternative to adding/upgrading to a GT).

Also note that I have a bit of frustration w/ the Sov w/ falsing on the edge of iron objects.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
_Rich_

*reminds me of another question I'll start a new thread for

Take a look a the Xterra 70. It has a wide variety of coil options and has alot of adjustments making it work well in lots of locations.

Try setting your sens low on the Sov(about 3oclock) and see how that helps your swing speed and you will still get good depth. You should also notice your threshold returns a bit quicker at this setting.
