2nd Hunt with XTerra 70

I took the X70 out for it's second field test cause that's where it really counts. I picked another tough site. It was a combination US/CS camp site with 4 period bldg's that were there back then, it's very trashy. This camp has been pounded hard this year by many machines.

I used the 18.79 khz coil. I tried a test in my front yard with both the 7 khz coil and the 18.79 coil. I put a Union eagle button on the ground and surrounded it with 4 square nails which were about 2 inches from it. The 7 khz coil couldn't see thru the nails and get a clear lock on signal. The 18.79 coil could got a clear loud signal way above the button. So, that's why I picked the high frquency coil for this hunt.

At the first of the hunt I used these setting- Volume all the way up, sensitivity max, threshold at 6, All Metal, and Auto Ground balance.
I changed to Discrimination 1 shortly afterward cause that seemed to work better for me in the real trashy areas. The depth and discrimination in trash was very impressive. I found several relics with nails by them but the X70 had no problem giving me a good signal. This was by far the best machine I have used in this area.

I found a variety of camp site relics from misc. to buttons. I dug several small buttons which are tough find in nails. The eagle cuff button has traces of gold gilt on the face. The best relic of the day was an Ohio Breastplate. Only got half of it but half is better then nothin. The X70 is a keeper and will be my main machine.

Can you tell us what machines you have used in the past on this site.
Also you said you had the sensitivity on Max yet this is a very trashy site, didn't you get any false signals & instability,I've always been told to reduce sensitivity in trash or does this only apply to the UK.
Finally maybe you could detect this area again using the Prospecting mode & 18.75khz frequency coil & let us know your results.Thanks.

Cibola, Tejon, Vaquero, Silver Umax, Whites Prizm 4, Headhunter LandPro, Fisher 1270, and Goldmaxx. Using the X70 at max worked fine for me.
I'll try backing off a little bit next time and see what that does.

How deep were your finds and what is your secondary back up machine that you use? I know the ground is hot in Brandy, but how deep were the cuff buttons in that soil? Also you mentioned the Tesoro machines, etc...how deep were they getting relics as compared to you and your new "beast"? :)

on the site. This site is in a plowed field. I'm not the only person that hunts it either, several other hunters hit this site each year when the ground is turned over. Yesterday is the tail end of hunting this site for the year since they are about to plant crops. So, for months it's been hit hard.
The Tesoro machines were in there prior to yesterday and left quite a bit for the X70. Most of the relics were deep, not sure on exact depth so I won't guess. I can tell you that I was impressed. Never expected to find that many relics at this stage of hunting that site.
My backup up machine is a Cibola with a 5.75 coil. It hasn't seen much use
since the XTerra's came out. As soon as Minelab puts out a small coil for the X70, the Cibola will be sold. I'll have a X70 as a backup.

So in iron, how would you rate this machine, it sounds as if you were in or close to the Valley or at Brandy Station. I am assuming the latter, however- how was the ground super mineralized? How deep you were you getting the cuffs? With the Cibola or Vaquero I can get a good cuff button in bad ground say at between 6" to 8". Would you say the 70 was getting your stuff deeper or did you avoid the hot ground as many have done for many years as they couldn't get that deep?

Thx for your help and info- I am sure many are reviewing your post with the useful information you are providing.

I'm in good ole Mississippi. I enjoy hunting plantations and camps which have a-lot of nails and other kinds or iron. This machine has worked very well in iron and will do fine for my type of hunting. The ground down here is excellent, some of the best in the South, low mineralization. The X70 goes deeper then my Cibola or the other Tesoro machines(Tejon & Vaquero)I have used.
Good Hunting Christian,

Dan,

Appreciate your comments- and we have similar things here, however we have one thing that many states don't have and that is some of the worst magnetite ground that many machines don't do well in. In fact some areas you can't detect a mini that is more than four inchs down in the bad soil, as truly the soil is "hot". Please keep us posted on the field tests as they are informative, especially your post about the 18khz coil and how well it did in iron!!!

"Trust but Verify"

Good hunting...

So the machine did well in the ground of culperper? How deep was it getting cuff or coat buttons in that "hot" ground? **Note- for all that review this, if this machine does well in this soil, then more than likely it will do well in most soil types around the world...

I hunted 7-8 hours with a fresh set of Energizer batteries. Afterward, I tested them and they were just an angel hair below maximum. So close you can say max power after a long day of hunting.
