40 pennies, 18 dimes, 5 nickles, 2 quarters, a set of keys, a junk ear ring, and an encrusted chain (gold in color). Does gold get crusty like that, or is it more likely to be pot metal?

Gold will not do what the chain you have is doing fred. Stick a magnet on it. It looks ferrous from here, but it's a chain. Good hunt. It looks like a pretty good bit-o-stuff!
