I go over my best sites multiple times from different directions with different settings and coils. I no longer believe that any site is hunted out as I seem to always, with careful searches find more, but Ill admit that they can get pretty slow. I always check the digs of others when I come upon them too as they leave me some great finds, Last week was the best ever left for me to find in 30 years of detecting; an 1884 Morgan Dollar left right on top of the pile of dirt. I'm thinking by the amount of junk left strewn about that they most likely thought the high pitch signal was another piece of large iron or something, or they didn't recognize it as a dollar as it was covered in thick crusty black, maybe they discriminated it out. For the life of me I just cant figure out how a person taking the time to detect could get so involved in whatever they were doing enough to not know how to find that silver dollar. It is possible that they had a new detector and did not modify the discrimination to allow the Dollar signal. (one of the first things I did when I got my e trac). I don't know, I feel a bit guilty now that I have cleaned it up that it was such an easy find that someone had gone to so much effort to release from the earth, I cant help but wonder how they did not even take time to check and recheck the piles of dirt they brought up...all that effort and a quick sweep and move on???

Oh well, I think Ill keep it.

I thought you'd enjoy a pic of the gold watch I found about 60 feet away from the dollar and two of my biggest gold ring finds from the past that I've never posted. If you look close you will see one ring is a jade green stone that has been stained over time, and the other very old ring has 2 quartz stones with gold in them.

Impressive finds! That morgan almost looks like it was in a fire or heat damagaed in someway, never seen one look like that, love the gold watch, is it stamped and how did it ring up?

LOL, that's because you probably have never seen anyone have to clean a silver dollar with a wire wheel ! I know, I know, never clean a coin, but it was so black and crusty and unimpressive that I had to shine it up so I took the dremel to it. It was in bad condition to begin with and it is much more fun to talk about than try fore any numismatic value.

Thanks for lookin Goes, try not to think about me with my wire wheel.

Within the last couple of weeks checked the plugs someone else dug. Pulled the plug nothing, put the plug back and then
noticed a merc sitting next to it. On the other pulled the plug, stuck the probe into the hole and found a older wheatie.

thx lespaul ( great guitar )

Cruffler, I could not even count how many times that has happened with the e trac. Im pretty sure in the area Im in that some of the Non double D coils will get a signal at depth and when they break the halo that they loose the signal. I have also learned that when a good, deep signal goes away when Ive removed some of the dirt that I need to KEEP digging. About 70% of those targets are real targets and once out of the ground they ring up fine, and I love that kind of detecting. I can also tell you that I go over my digs as well and have found targets that I missed even though I know that I need to be extra careful not to do that. I think this is due to me tipping the coin on edge and not checking enough, then when I come back later on the coin has settled into a more horizontal position and I get to dig it the rest of the way.

Crazy but It keeps me on my toes knowing that I need to be supper quizzical. But a dollar? That's one that I just have to laugh at.

Outstanding!

I hit one of my active sportsfields this am...somebody dug a hole the size of a garbage can lid, left the Q they were after laying off to the side where they piled their dirt...lotsa newbies afield this spring..all I can think of is they stuck their Pinpointer down in the hole and the signal was not there anymore, so they filled it in and walked away...damndest thing! Nice dollar you got there! I hope I can find the guy thats digging up my active fields and school him a little, or I might get blamed!

Yeah, that 'almost' happened to me once (that i know of :look: )....and i've been around the block. Though the hole was only the size of a dessert plate!
Always re-sweep those filled-in holes!

Nice......!!!!! I was very lucky 2 summers ago to dig my one and only 1879s Morgie in good shape. They are a gorgeous coin indeed........

I think there is allot of new kids that got detectors for xmass. I saw a couple young boys last week trying out there new detecter that Dad got them. Only thing was they didn't even have a pinpointer so I can imagine the messes they are going to make before they Findlay lose intrest and move on to something else.

I once was so exited to get on with a hot spot that after I dug up a liberty dime I placed it back in the hole for a photo with the tape measure. Yep you guessed it I pulled the tape and filled the hole back in. I didn't realize it till I did my double check with the detecter, for a second there I thought there was more in the hole. Then I did my best Hommer impression I could muster. Doope!

Excellent finds - congrats ! :beers:

Thanks for lookin guys,

Oneguy; I know I'm about to sound like im braggin...but, Ive found 8 silver dollars, as for the watch, ive found 9 of those but never in very good shape and only one gold. I'm a die hard shovelhead but don't want to talk about the bike...had to sell it as im such a financial genius, still hurts. I might start cryin.

coondog' that be funny, I relate to that with my story about the merc dime signal that disappeared...found it stuck to the mud on my shoe about 20 min later. I had smoothed out the pile w my foot.
the crazy part about that is I kept getting a signal every time I stepped my left foot forward then Id search and NADA...I bout died when I figured it out.

Hey Neb: nice to see you lurkin on my post.

Ohio; thanks much sir.

good luck guys,

shov.

Still finding those Silver Dollars ehhh? Very nice job. I can see somebody missing that as they do come out of that black gunk all covered with black gunk!. Kinda camoflaged if you aren't looking close and don't bother sweeping the pile. Thoroughness has its' rewards.

Eight is a pretty good score for Silver Dollars. Very well done.
