26 degree heatwave...2 hour hunt...FIRST ever 12" deep silver dime...then a NIGHTMARE:help:

Wow....26 degrees and some light sleet bouncing off my buddy Hercules and I. Oh well...might be one of the last hunts...if not THE last hunt of the year...and I'm glad it can end on a good note if need be.:)

I'll go nutso this winter when I won't be able to swing the coil:blink:...but the time is comin'...and comin' fast.

This was a good hunt in which I was digging a keeper about every 10 to 15 minutes...and that just does not happen around these here parts.

I dug 2 wheaties... then a barber. I then got a very faint but repeating hit and the cursor actually fluttered clear over to where my iron mask is set at -22 before slightly moving back right.

I then switched over to the all metal pinpoint mode on the SE and again the cursor stayed towards the right center...never heading towards iron...but not really moving much towards top right either. The key was though that even in pinpoint... the cursor didn't go towards iron...so I felt this had a shot at being a deep coin.

I dug a deep plug and ran the probe...nothing. I decided to dig the hole deeper before giving up on it and I'm glad I did. At about the 9" depth level I finally got a sweet sound with the probe...and it was still much deeper after hitting the pinpoint.

At this point I thought no way it was going to be a coin this deep...but I dug deeper...until the probe was singing right on top of whatever was beneath it.. I measured the depth from the tip of the Lesche touched to the still hard bottom of the hole (undisturbed soil)...to the 2"+ length from the tip of the handle to the top edge of the hole.
I then plopped out a small chunk of dirt with a sweet silver rim shining through.

From a full and HONEST 12" deep came my deepest ever dug silver dime...and it was only a 1944 Merc.

[attachment 181690 prohunt5.jpg] [attachment 181691 prohunt6.jpg]

The barber I had dug was only at 9" deep and here was this 1944 Merc from 12" down?? Hey I'm not complaining...and it sure as heck beats the snot out of digging down 12" a few weeks ago and getting excited about my first ever foot deep dime...only to get punked by CLAD.:bouncy:

I then got 2 more wheaties and one more Merc which gave me 3 silver and 5 wheats in exactly 2 hours. I was so excited that I snapped a pic of my 8 keepers with my cel phone...then sent it to a couple close friends to share my excitement.:clapping:

I thought..."what a sweet way to end the hunting season"...it's time to go home with my hunt ending on a merc as the last dig of the day....and probably season.

I then realized I had 15 minutes of daylight left...so why not try for one more keeper? Well fellers'...that's where a wonderful day started to head south.

After 30 minutes it was now dark and I had nothing more. I just didn't want to leave yet and end the hunt like this. I should have left at 5:00 with my 8 keepers in 2 hours...but no...I had to hunt a little longer.:smoke:

Finally at 6:00 I got a sweet hit about 7" so I dug. From 7.5" came a stinkin' memorial cent. NO way I'm ending the year on that.

I kept pluggin' away...and it was now 6:20 pitch black dark...and I got finally another sweet hit...but it was intermittent and didn't repeat like I like with the pro coil...but still sounded good.

Well from over 8" down came my one and only crap dig...a freakin' nail.:bouncy:

Now I am completely depressed and worried I am gonna' have to go home...ending on a memorial cent...and a nail.:surrender:

My hands are freezing...my toes are already beyond frozen...Herky is barking at me cause he's been ready to leave for nearly 2 hours:cool:...and it's now 6:30...an hour and a half longer than I wanted to be here...but NO way I'm leaving now.:crylol:

FINALLY at close to 7:00...I got a nice hit that repeated from multiple angles...and about 8" according to the depth meter. I was hoping it wasn't gonna' be another memorial since I dug one earlier from over 7". Thank God...when I shined my flashlight on it...I saw it was a wheatie...otherwise I would have been there another 2 hours.

Pretty sad I know...but I say to you with all honesty...if it would have taken another hour to end the hunt on a "keeper"...I would have been there another hour....OR longer.

No way I was ending the year with a nail.:)

Do any of you ever act foolish like this??? ...or am I the only obsessive goof that refuses to give up until the fat lady is on the last line of her song??:clapping:

Well if it was indeed the last hunt of the year for me...at least I can be at peace by ending on a keeper...just took 2 hours longer to do so:punch:

PLEASE check out the pictures forum and contribute with some entertainment. It's gonna' be a long winter.

:usaflag:Nice finds and you ended the hunt the way you wanted. And I will admit that the hobby can be obsessive, but my wife says it's still better than having a husband you have to chase out of the bar every night.

Nothing wrong with that Bryce! Especially on the last hunt of the season! Your obsessive last find is what you needed. I don't really remember doing that, but I do have a hard time turning around when making grid patterns. I get to where I have turned before and look on down the row and just have to make a couple more swings further. Sometimes I'll have to go an extra 25'! I guess it is just acting on intuition - what else can I do? There was a super article on detecting and intuition in this current issue of Western and Eastern Treasure Mag.

Glad you got out and found those last keepers of the year!

I do the same in a field BF, especially if im finding targets. You just keep saying .... i wonder if im out of the sweet spot yet? Nice find Bryce. Ive not hunted but once so far this month, but noticed the soil acting like it does in the spring..... great depth and tone of the coins. The only way i could take my Jack Russell detecting with me is if she saw a squirrel when we first got out of the truck in a tree. She would be right there all day then otherwise shes like a bullet .... shes everywhere. I may go out Fri.... its supposed to be almost a heat wave 38... before the second blast hits. As far as obsession.... well the wife thinks im nuts.... but shes come to realize i just love to get out side. Keep them coming...

12" dime with the pro coil is impressive, the fact that you haven't been using it very long makes it even more impressive. I'd say you ended your season on an extremely high note.

Been there done that too, I came to the conclusion we always feel were only as good as our last hunt and last hunt can't end on a stinker. I hate to go home without a real "keeper" and that for me is a wheatie or better. I remember when I first started with my Ace 250 going home "skunked" no coin, no "artifact" nothing but junk. When I got to the point I felt more competent I could not go home without at least a coin even if it's clad, now I need to have that keeper....when does it ever end  Oh well as long as I am having fun!!

To paraphrase what Scarlet O'Hara said: "I swear as God as my witness I will never be skunked again"

Genus Mephitis

I went out to hunt but it stunk
For all I found was some junk
Though it all seems unreal
Now I know how it feels
To end up being a skunk

I knew if anyone could find a 12" silver dime it would be you, Congratulations, you have done what no one else has ever done that I have ever heard of. HH:detecting:

Glad you ended your season with a keeper Bryce.
It would have bugged you ALL winter if you had quit
with a nail as the last targer. Congrats on a good
hunt. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

Congrats on the great finds and wonderful depth that you are getting with the Pro Coil! Sounds like the Pro Coil is really producing for you! As you know I have been a fan of it for a while now. I'll bet Herc was mighty glad you found that last wheat :)

Sounds like a good "last" hunt to me! All of us sick folks on the forum probably find themselves pushing it at times like you did. I often find myself looking for
that last good signal before I quit for the day.
I kid my hunting buddy (he's 33 yrs younger than me) - if he's not finding anything he gets toasted after 30 min - 1 hour. When I get going I'm like the energizer bunny - I just keep going and going. My attitude is: there's a good coin here SOMEWHERE and I'm going to find it! Being self employed, the slices of time I can detect are my escape and I want to make the most of it.
Cold as heck in Ct right now but I'm hoping for a warm break soon.

Nice finds Bryce and a good way to end your season if indeed this is it for you till spring, but I have a feeling the cold weather won't keep you home. I can't imagine not being to do any detecting till spring and thank goodness we are still able to get out around here if the ground isn't too frozen. Even those rusty nails fools the best of us from time to time.:clapping: GL & HH if you get out again.

[size=large]i dunnu know bryce. i think you'd gone out til you did end on a keeper if you'd not found that wheatie. it still may not be the end for you. there's still 22 days left in the year. i'm bett'n you're looking for gaps in the clouds. any reason to get out. and i'm sure Herky is telling you to go ahead but he'll stay home and keep the light on in the window. thanks for the story.

I like going out on my own terms. I definitely don't like getting skunked and will often stay past a reasonable amount of time trying to find something to call the hunt worthwhile. Some days that is ending on a good note, like a keeper. Other days, it might be leaving disgusted and checking a site off of the list of 'PLACES TO TRY".

Great job on the finds Bryce,So glad Herk is ok!
A broke leg is bad enough!

I'm the same way - I'll talk myself into staying until I find another keeper of some sort.

A little farther north of you, we need this 2-3" of white stuff to go away... of course, more is coming down right now tonight... but we are hoping that we get a little thaw on Friday/Saturday, so we can get out at least once more before the winter shuts us down.

A measured 12 inches on a dime is pretty amazing!

Really nice finds and pictures. You are braving the elements and I might do the same this weekend. WTG on finding a 12" deep dime.

Bryce, that's what seperates the fanatical detectorists from the casual ones. More than once I've found myself 500 miles from home on a pitch black Sunday night at a site calculating the absolute latest I can hunt before I HAVE to quit so I can jump in the truck and drive like a maniac straight back to St Louis to show up at work on time Monday morning.:stretcher: All in the name of finding just one more goodie.....Man, you haven't lived a rough Monday at work until you try that one! Impressive depth with coil your getting there, you're making me consider buying it.... too many spots I know of with deeeeep silver I could use that at. Take care, and hopefully we'll get more good weather for a last trip out before the end of the year! Mike.

Thanks for the great story and pictures Bryce. Its nice to hear someone hittin' that depth with a detector. Especially on a dime!

Good job bud. I've seen you pull some 11" silver before so I knew you would hit a 12"er sooner or later. Looks to me like you have found a new addition to your keeper coil collection. I just have more confidence in my sef coil but you have me considering trying the pro some more. Give Herk a pat on the snoot for me. Later bud.
