2500 QUESTION

Rob M

New member
I just received my GTI2500 and my ADS shed a tear, but I assured it that it would stay as backup. I can not play with GTI until my B-day(per Mrs. clause) however I already have questions and will have many more. How does the stock coil work in trashy locations, how does the target ID work upon multiple coins in one area as this seems to be a common occurrence for me, and is there a trick to tell pull tabs from rings, or at least reduce the number of trash digs (probably not). I could probably figure this out on my own but the forum is always helpful on giving me an edge. All help is always appreciated.
Thanks Rob

Multipile coins will read good on the ID and ring with a belltone . But i've found that the imaging will read larger then the (B) coin size. Most of the time (C) size. So if you get a good tone and ID with a (C) size reading it would pay to check it out !!!!!! :detecting:

Trashy Locations-Using the stock coil might just be fine. If you raise the coil about the 3 inches, the cone field shape gets smaller allowing less targets underneath. but....unfortunately you do lose some depth. The other alternative is to purchase the small sniper coil. This problem of coil size vs. trashy areas is common with all detectors. The id will only lock on one Target at a time, and the pinpointing could be off center sightly with a coin in close proximity. Now multiple coins using the true all metal mode really confused the machine if under the coil because it is so very sensitive.

rings-Pull tabs. the best way to describe the difference, is two ways:

1) Rings have a smooth sound, compared to pull tabs.

2) Pull tabs either have that beaver tail or are square. If you swung the coil over these pull tabs from different directions, you will notice different audio signals. The square pulltabb will give a harsher sound because of the corners. This is not 100% effective, but does have a fair probability rate. A round pull tab with the beaver tail broken off will sound just like a ring.

I do OK with the stock coil in trashy locations. I sometimes (frequently) turn off some of the notches that are almost always trashy items like pull tabs when hunting at really trashy sites. Not right away but after about 40 or 50 junk targets. I just run out of patience. I always go back and found a nice chunky silver bracelet that rang up as about 3 notches to the right of nickel on a third return trip to a playground in a spot I had hunted. I plan on adding a sniper coil to my bag next year.

I had an Ace 250 and got used to two quarters ringing up as a half dollar. It happened a lot. It has only happened two or three times with the 2500. I found one really big quarter spill with the 2500 that rang up on quarter and as size B. I think it was 11 quarters and two zinc pennies. None were touching or at least not touching too much. I have had lone nickels ring up as size C more than any other coin signal. Even the one clad half I found indicated size B. I suppose it depends on depth, and conditions, and technique just as it always does. FWIW I dig all Size A, B and C signals and only selected size D and E.

I have just the one gold ring with the 2500 and it was an oddball. 22 K gold. It was a strong signal but so are a lot of pull tabs. In my practicing I have not been able to figure out any difference in signals but I'm going too look for what was suggested above or below, wherever this goes. I think John in Edmonton posted it.

It took me one 4 hour day to feel comfortable with the 2500 and a week or two until I strongly preferred it over my Ace 250. You'll see what I mean. I hope you will post some great pics and tips too!

Chris

PS If you want I can send you instructions on how to unwrap and rewrap agift so nobody could ever tell.
