250 depth? Boy was I wrong.

We went over to our son's today for Easter dinner. I had the 250 in the back of the car (where it stays until my wife hunts with me), so I put the sniper coil on (for the second time) and figure I would give a whirl at this old home inherited from his grandfather. I first searched the sides of the old driveway. Getting a lot of tones where the car used to be parked. I started digging a Belltone with my knife (6" blade and 6" handle) until the handle was half way into the ground. I stopped figuring that there is no way the sniper goes that far down. I pinpointed again to find that I was 1" off from center now (could have sworn I PP it to center) and after a full 6" knife blade full of dirt from the side, out pops a clad penny at about the 5" mark.

To make a long story short, I hunted for about 2 hrs, finding 1 quarter, 4 pennies, a dime, 3 bottle caps, some foil, 2 nails, a few unidentifiable junk metal pieces and 6 washers. I thought I had a small cache when I dug the washers, they were those thin white painted ones that hit like silver.

Anyways, my deepest find was one of the bottle caps at 8" (truly 8"). How does this coil pick up at 8"? Seroiously, I told my wife the sniper stays. It does better than the stock coil. I am still flabbergasted. Is it really possible for the sniper to get that far down? I still don't believe it, but I checked the hole to make sure I wasn't hitting on something else.

I think my sniper is haunted.

Your not dreaming! You can throw the old rule of thumb out the door. It says a coil effectively detects into the ground the diameter of the coil. That means the sniper would go only 4.5 inches. The sniper users know better.

The 250 was designed with Alien technology. Sometimes when it's real quiet I can just barely hear a faint tone with the sniper. I think it's saying "Phone Home"

Yeah others ( myself included when I field tested it for Garrett ) have discovered this little secret. It's good for an easy seven inches or more on coins.

Looks like you didn't buy my "Ace 250 tips and tests" booklet.
I tested the sniper coil and it hits at 6" on a dime or penny and close to 7" on a quarter when you run sensitivity at max. The sniper can find an aluminum drink can at 11".
My eye opening Ace 250 tips and test booklet is available for $ 3.00 and shipping is included to 48 states.

I only had an hour or so to mess around and wanted to test some "sniper" rigs on a planted target; a dime that I'd previously buried 5.5" deep. I like to test newer machines/coils etc. on this target and have cleared out all the trash from this area.

I had these 5 machines:

250 - 4.5" coil
Freedom Ace Plus - 4.5" coil
1000 PM - 5.5" HotHead coil
Compadre - 5.75" coil
Tejon - 5.75" coil

I have to say that all of these rigs would 'hit' the dime in disc. mode but some of them required a slower sweep speed to do so.

Not the 250. I could swing it about as fast as I wanted without missing that dime.

Impressive performance for an 'economy-grade' machine! It also hits nickels/small gold harder than any other Garrett that I've used.

Now the Tejon goes considerably deeper on nickels, but it's designed as a 17+ khz relic-hunter and isn't a TID machine either.

Both TID machines and "knobbys" have a place for the types of hunting that I like to do.

Again, the 250 is impressive, performance-wise and for the many features it has for the money.

I know what you are talking about. I have the new Fisher F75 which is a good detector and separates well due to its DD coil but at a school close to the old trees i switched back to the Ace 250 with the sniper coil because separation is awesome and depth is still about 6 to 7" on a coin when i run sens. at max.

in my test garden and it too is great with a sniper coil. I bought the gtax 1250 nib with the 5 year warranty and still don't know whether or not to keep it or sell it....only because I already have 4 other detectors. The warranty is unused and the video is still sealed. I put it together and tried it in my test garden. I picked up the sniper coil fron Dan. PA and it's a killer around my test trash/coin targets. I have the ace 250 for my son and he loves it. Now if I could only decide whether or not to keep or sell the gtax 1250. It's a sweet machine...I just don't know if I will find time to use it.
Happy hunting.

...IS that it does not cover as much ground. I like to use bigger coils, especially in wider open areas like farms and wide open parks (if they are not too trashy). I think you are more likely to miss a target that is not under the coil, not because of the depth of the target.

Better hang onto that 1250. It's identical to the 1350 and 1500 sans imaging and profiling. It's one sweet machine.
