$20 Gold Double Eagle dream coin!

Goldstrike

Well-known member
I would absolutely LOVE to be able to post this coin as an actual find but I haven't found one YET!!!! THIS IS MY DREAM COIN...a $20 DOUBLE EAGLE GOLD COIN. I would be ecstatic if and when I found one...any date will be great...Now I just have to detect in places where there is a chance that they may be found and make my dream a reality!.
Now can I ask just for fun?...
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM FIND COIN?
It could also be a relic find!

I nearly wet myself when I read the heading and saw your name! I figured you found one!.. .thats not outside the scope of reason for a hunter like you!...:please:

Ok, I guess any gold coin would suffice for me, after all, thats the trophy right? Just check it off the list and move on to another goal...

My "dream coin" is a Franklin Half for some reason, I dream about finding one all the time!...I even bought one at a coin shop and put it in a little pouch under my pillow! I dont know why that is my dream coin, but it is...maybe my Grandpa gave me one when I was kid? I dont know..
Mud

That is what I thought too Mud lol. Gold would be spectacular to unearth for sure but for me, my dream find would be a 1793 Chain Cent.

I just added a DE to my collection and have a St. Gaudens on the way. It's been about 25yrs since I've had a Liberty Head DE. Nothing like the beauty of American gold coinage made when the country was once a great nation but unfortunately............

Here's a recent purchase........

Mud.....I wished it was my find!! and E.P.L. that is an awesome coin in pristine condition!...very beautiful! Oneguy.....very envious of that D.E. Yes, I feel exactly the way you do regarding American gold coinage. Gold is such a majestic, timeless, even heart stirring metal and it always has been for me, a portal to great American history. I continue to wish/hope/pray with many patriots that we can turn this country around back to the greatness we once enjoyed. This would take some good, honest men with integrity to make this happen. Don't lose hope!

For me it would just be a Civil War relic, besides a bullet. I only get the opportunity to search for sites about 4 or 5 times a season and still haven't been able to locate a site that hasn't been built over, bulldozed, now TVA land, or just can't get permission. In fact, the next few weeks will the last for the season I suspect. I guess that by this time next year I will be primarily a jewelry hunter.

I don't know where you live Canewrap but if it's one of those Eastern States where there was Civil War action, I'm envious! Living here in Southern California, there is no chance of finding those relics from that era. I thought most if not all of those Civil War sites were protected sites owned by the Federal Gov;.? Good luck though in finding your dream relic from the C.W. time!

A co-worker of mine back in the 70's got me interested in detecting. Specifically it was his story of finding a bucket of those $20 gold pieces when he lived in Colorado.

As his story went, he and his buddy researched a late 1800s outlaw band that was caught and all shot dead by a possi without the loot ever being recovered. They triangulated where the loot was stolen from, time frames, horse speeds, distances and eventually came up with a probable site. Minor problem, that site was in a State or National Park.
Anyhow they searched the site, found an old campfire ringed with scattered stones and one of their detectors came alive smack dab in the middle of that old campfire. They dug out an old cast iron bucket loaded with gold $20 gold coins.

The bad news, the park service police stealthily stalked these detector swinging guys, detained and/or arrested them and confiscated the coins. He never did tell me the out come of all that that i can remember!
Now I worked with this guy for a couple years and went on many detecting sessions with him and I believe his story. He had a spooky 6th sense for finding coins too.

Ironsight....the fact that sticks out so much is that they must have bragged/leaked the story out and that got the Park Service Police on their tails. That being said, it could have turned out to be a bonanza for them IF they had remained silent on their discovery.
I for one have great admiration for all the homework they performed to get those gold coins.
I'm sure that there are guy's/detectorists and treasure hunters out there that are sworn to secrecy when they find hidden cache's like the story you shared. If I ever had my time over again, I would be a professional treasure hunter because my soon to be 63 year old body wouldn't stand up to the rigors of those adventures!!! Thank you for sharing!

I agree with mud and earthllpotluck, gold coins are the holy grail for any detectorist, but for me, my dream coin is the walker half! It has to be one of the most attractive coins ever minted.
