2 weeks hunting, 6 gold rings!

Outstanding! Thats some more good hunting!

Stilts? I dont know? There are professional stilts made that drywallers and painters use, made out of aluminum, (might interfere with the signal) and strap to the leg,..also, How would a guy dig a target? Would it be somewhat easier to strap on a weight belt, with a snorkle on the surface, then dive down and fan for a target? A guy would have to be careful to not get out too deep though, Of course diving would be the ticket, but if a guy didn't have his tanks and gear and had to improvise, I also would like to hear what some others do...

I've got those stilts mud, they are called dura stilts, I use them for gigs in nightclubs etc. But they weigh a lot, and are bulky. Something similar would work, something that just attached to the sole of your foot as you'ld have your scoop for stability to lean on when you walk in the water and also the water acts to stabilise you as well. It wouldn't be to hard to press the scoop in with a foot sized stilt foot, it would just take a bit of practice. I've tried snorkelling down, but it's the detecting of the target which makes it tricky, rather than the recovery. You can't keep diving under to detect, and it's to deep to walk and breath with a snorkel, by about 1 or 2 feet. It's crazy because I Recon there is loads of gold lying just out of reach. If t was at home i'ld be loving it, but you can't hire or fly out with the right kit....grrrr

I'd love to see the reaction on peoples faces if you went down the beach with that set up lol.At times it would probably look as though you were walking on water.:surprised:
Great finds from your trip, love the large ring.....that's got to be worth a bit. There is loads of jewelry further out,i look at all the swimmers and surfers out well beyond the low tide line and have visions of rings raining down onto the seabed.:bouncy:There must be loads out there as not many detectorists ever make the effort to go out there and find it.
All the best,neil.

That is some great hunting there wizard.6 gold rings is just fantastic. As far as the stilts idea you may want to come up with a plan-b.. I had the same idea for a local lake.i took an old pair of work boots and fastened them to the upside down bottom of 5gallon buckets.put holes in side of buckets to break water resistance when walking in the water and made quick release mechanism so I could easily detach the bucket boots from my feet if I got in trouble.also had a floatation ring around my chests so no matter what I would always stay a float.keep in mind I used this get up in a placid sand bottom lake and I can tell you from experience that even though it more less worked for me it really isnt worth it.you cannot imagine how awkward it was to walk and maintain balance .mine was so I could detect 7 foot deep water where the old diving dock was.i only found 1 copper ring and a quarter for my efforts.dont get me wrong the idea is a brilliant one .but to make it work safely is darn near impossible and the wrong time to realize you overlooked something is when you are in the water.not good.and if you are thinking of using them in saltwater with waves and current I would say forget about it.just aint worth it no matter how much gold could be out there.sorry if this isnt the answer you wanted to hear but better safe than dead.happy hunting

WW! Been thinking about the deep water drop off hunting idea, like Bootyhound was saying...you see those vids from CarterNY? He hits the deep water where folks are inclined to jump off a dock or something...with his dive gear.

I dont know if just hunting any old deep water drop off would be any good unless there was some feature that pulled a lot of people to that spot? Like a swimming raft, or a rope tree, or a bridge, or dock or a hidden cove where lots of rich drunken gold wearers raft up their boats all together, or something?

Just hunting deep offshore a major swimming beach may not be any good, and it would be pretty tough working a long drop off run wearing those stilts, when a fellow could tank up and cruise it more effectively? I bet with stilts it would be hard to control the coil, and get a nice even sweep? Just thinking...

I watch those beach cams, and it seems theres a higher volume of people in the shallows to waist/chest deep out to where the waves curl? So maybe the better time spent is in the shallower zone? Unless a guy can find where a deep old raft or a dive tower, or cliff was...Clives new book will be good for you I think..its helped me settle down and refocus so I dont waste any productive hunting time this coming year...

The shallower zone up to chest deep is where I would spend some time I think.Over In England our water temps are quite cool so in theory anything waste height or above and peoples hands are in the water shrinking with the cold..........and off fall their rings.
I do share some of the concerns of others regarding the safety of being in deeper water with stuff tied to your feet etc........but i'm sure you'd be able to escape from such a predicament.:thumbup:;);)

That sounds and looks like a great time...6 gold is a nice haul and 18k being the most in weight is fantastic. Good Luck Be Careful...BTW the weather sucks here in Florida.

Great result WW, some nice gold there

I know of a Spanish beach that drops off very quickly too..not sure if it levels off, but it caught me out first time having a "splash about" and can imagine many a tourists gold ring coming off in a panic of frantic splashing to get sand back beneath their feet again !!!

Now getting the gold from that treasure chest of the deep wont be easy, and I would imagine its one of the few areas of the beach thats never been properly searched, because of the difficulty so should be full of gold... but getting it isnt going to be easy,

I thought about this problem a few years ago after a trip to a Spanish beach like this...
and have a couple of ideas, but i'm not going to mention them here as someone might be beat me to it and get it all

Hiring scuba equipment may be the way forward, but not for me, i'm not trained :surrender: ...yet lol

Hope the storms strips your beaches down to the bling, keep safe mate :)

Still sanded in on the East coast up here

Congratulations on the 6 gold ring and the Spanish coin. I don't have a clue about the stamps. Hope next time you visit this area you can have your scuba gear and clean it up. I wonder how you would make out with one of the sea scooters? They would speed you up on the snorkeling and you would have more time to find & recover your target. Or, use the discharge from the sea scooter to remove the sand from the target. I couldn't work the stilts myself, but it seems like quite a hassle even if you are physically fit and coordinated.

A Hooka rig is the way to go, if you don't know what it is , its a floating air compressor, can be 12 volt or small gas engine driven.
Can be used down to 30 feet. Just like scuba except has a air line instead of tanks. Everything floats by a truck inter tube.
Add a weight belt, a mask, and 30 ft of air line and your all set. Theres lots of them in use, no crack pot idea of mine.
Forget the stilt idea, won't work and you could ending up killing yourself. For cold water diving I would co with a dry suit not a wet suit.
More money to get it all set up but would be a first rate outfit for detecting with. Would have to be much aware of tides and rip currents
but that's not a big deal.

Yeah I know what you mean about the stilts, but I can't take scuba kit with me, and they won't hire it out, you have to go on a dive with the leader. I know there is a drop off of about 1.5 feet, then it levels out. The gold is going to be at the bottom of the drop of slope. I've found lots on the slope. I used to work all over the world playing football (soccer) on stilts, I am a performer (www.merlincadogan.com)
I know I could easily and safely use them in this particular area, I might get the springs replaced with stainless steel springs, and give it a crack. I bet there are loads if places that the tilts (up to 3foot higher) would enable you to search untouched areas. A metal sleeve over my scoop handle bolted through, and my straight shaft fully extended on my Excalibur, with a noodle float around me for safety.
If I could take my scuba kit it would be best, but that's not possible....

You are one crazy huckleberry there Merlin! By Gar' I'm gonna have to toss back a few with a bloke like you one of these days!:beers:

Hey, You got SIX gold in 2 weeks hunting! Thats downright killer in anybodies book, yet I hear the urge for double or triple haul!

D-Tex talking hooka rig...perfectly good idea! .and I know you have already considered (and may employ) Fongu's, sand blow out method...? A fellows got to go after the gold to get it in a big way!...I'm strategizin' myself for 2014...no dikking around this year, who knows how long a fellow can walk this Planet?!

Hi D-Tex, yes I have been watching a 12 v hookah that is super light on ebay but its in the USA, I'm in England. It was $300 plus $100 postage plus 20% import duty! I've got a brownies 3rd lung with a 3hp Honda, but I can't fly it abroad and back for a week. I'm thinking of making a 12v hookah, I've got regs and all the hoses already, just looking in to available 12v portable air compressors here in the UK. Did you make yours? Got any good tips? I only need to go to 5 metres, cheers mate :)

Wow merlin, I just saw the video of your 2009 performances on britains got talent.very cool. I didnt know we had a celebrity on the forum . Best of luck to you on all your future stunts.happy hunting. Dave
