2 U/W Detectors + Questions

I have a Garrett Sea Hunter 500 XL and all the things that came with it. It worked great in the FRESH water (I don't think it does well in the salt arena) but I am past the age where I will suit up in the wet suits, weights, etc. What would be a fair price if I were to move this to the classified section to sell?

I also have a Fisher 1280 XL. I have used this in the freshwater also. However, a trip to the Bahamas is in the near future and I would like to know how this detector will work in the saltwater and sand of the Bahamas. Some help please.

I fear I am looking at an Excalibur if I am going to use it in the saltwater. $$$$ Scary!!:|

Actually, the Sea Hunter 500, is the better salt water choice for you. You should be using the 1280 in fresh. Many of old locals still use the 500 in my area, but I feel it's a bit dated. coastwise was running one when 1st met him and the Mark II would outperform it. He now uses an Excal 1000 and I do to.

Thanks Gulf Hunter - I too would like the Excalibur. I run an Explorer SE out of the water and am impressed with the Minelab technology. I also kind of like the challenge of going through the learning curve to use it properly and effectively. Still, the Garrett sits and since it's in fine shape it seems shameful to let it sit and collect dust. Frankly, unless I go on vacation, most of my water hunting will be in the fresh water. I still will get an Excalibur but would like to sell the Garrett to someone who might want it. Could you elaborate on what technically makes the Garrett better for saltwater? If I don't get the Excalibur for our Bahama trip, I will take either the Garrett or the Fisher. Also, could anyone please suggest a reasonable ball park selling price on such a unit, or is it so useless I should keep it as a display unit? Thanks GOM.

The Garrett Seahunter 500, was originally designed for scuba diving wrecks in the ocean. It is a pulse induction (PI) unit, but a relatively slow pulse delay. Surf hunting with it, was an afterthought, I'm sure, LOL! I have no idea what it's worth, but there are still few old salts locally, who swear by them. You may want to converce with my local dealer at (713)946-6399 and ask for Bill. He still uses one and is a Garrett dealer. He may want to purchase the unit from you, who knows? Even if he does not want to buy the unit, he would have some idea about what they are worth and will be INTIMATELY familiar with it's operation and performance. Last time I was in his shop, he DID have one for sale and it was a clean unit. Give him a call.
