2 silver day for the v's.....

I was a hunting a local school when a buddy showed up. I was covering an area he had hunted to death and I had pulled a silver quarter out of a couple of weeks ago. I moved to a spot he had last found a gold ring at and he took over my area. I looked up after around 15 min and he was doing the happy dance. He pulled a 1942 quarter out of the ground. I thought great he is going to show me up again.

Around 5 min later I got a bouncing signal in between pulltabs at 5 1/2" It would vdi up to around 65 and then drop to 48 and then target the pulltabs around it. I would not have dug it with any of my past detectors. Once it was out of the hole it was difficult to find with all the trash present and being so small. The vibra pointer came through. It is a 1942 Australian 3 pence and it is in very good shape, minted in Denver.

We both got 1942 silver coins 100 yards apart within 5min...:clapping:

I also got a key date wheat a 1955D at 6" deep. I knew exactly what it was vdi, depth and frequency hit was tell me wheat cent. But it is not double struck, but you cant have everything.:drinking:

We had enough of digging in the dirt and then went to the beach. We both got a handful of clad and I got my 2nd silver of the day a 1964 dime. I didnt know till I got home and could clean it up a bit. But this was with my DF PI. I also got a ring and it sure had me fooled for a second, gold anodized aluminum in the bottom of the scoop.

Good hunting Vince:beers:

I has an encapsulating patina. There are some chips to it and the silver is shining through. I may use some muratic acid to eat through the hard layer. Soaking in boiling olive oil did not clean it.

An Australian 1942 Threepence (minted in Denver - D mint mark), uncirculated and in absolute mint condition could fetch up to $32 AUD. If it has been rattling around in somebody's pocket but still in good condition, it might fetch anything from $1.50 to $5 AUD.

There were 16 million minted.

I had to use electrolysis to clean the dime. I didnt want it not shiny and it is just a 64d. It turned out pretty good but lost a little detail.

I had a spare 12v ac adapter with 1 amp capacity. A little salt and a tad bit of lemon juice and around 15 minutes. Then a final cleaning with baking soda.

I know numismatists would hate any coin cleaned, improperly cleaned especially. Why do people like cleaning them?? Does not make sense to me, if anything is worth only melt value, why waste time and energy and money on salt even? If it is a rare coin, why not send it to be properly cleaned at a coin conservator or NGC that does proper cleaning services. If it's just melt 90% silver works for me, I would take truck loads of dirty filthy coins to be smelted the instant I got em.

To each his own. I clean all my silver, usually with soap and water. It hurts nothing because unless there is something rare or special about the coins there is no foul. We like them clean because we like looking at them. I'm not a numismatist or archaeologist.

Is this post really going to be dug up after this many years? I experimented with a Silver Rosie and it may have lost all its potential value......

"I for one would not smelt truck loads of dirty filthy coins"...... Sounds like someone has had a bad day....

I just got back from watching Superman :goodnight:
