1st- Is the XS coil cover actually the black portion of the standard coil,if so can this be taken off for underneath cleaning.
2nd- My XS seems to be doing something strange..It works fine while detecting in normal swinging position, but when I lay it on the ground or bring it up to horizontal level it kinda whacks out like it has solid metal under the coil. Lots of different sounds going off. I have pulled battery, also tried factory preset again. Can anyone help, or does it sound like I need to send it in?

The black portion is actually a cover that can be worked off the bottom of the coil. This should be done regularly to keep grit and sand from getting trapped under the coil which can lead to falsing
secondly, remember the coil detects from above as well as below. Any metal crossing the coil above the "Hot strip" will set it off. Perhaps the coil is picking up the control box or metal you are wearing. I have had interference from metal that was 3 feet above me (monkey bars). Remember you should carry as little metal when detecting as possible. If you get a WOT coil or other large coil it is even more important to "de-metal" yourself.

the explorer will false alot if the coil is away from the ground.. it picks up all kinds of radio waves in some areas.. but for some reason runs smooth with the coil pointed at the ground.. dont think you have a problem

Not sure if this is the reason ... are you laying your detector on the ground in the pin-point mode? If so that will cause what you describe. I always switch my Explorer to the disc mode when I lay it down.
If that's not it then as the other folks mentioned it could be llocal interference.
HH ... Gord.

crank my sens up to see if it will bring out a deep iffy better then lay it down, it goes ape s#!t. Too much sens when detecting will cost you depth. This is something no-one will convince me otherwise. Sure, you will pull some deep stuff, but I promise you are missing more than you want to. The place I am going to hunt tomorrow I will have my sens anywhere from 14 to 18 and no higher.
This is not your question, but it is my answer.

a loud tone when I set the detector down in pinpoint, just push the pinpoint again before you lay it down instead of when you are ready to detect. Sure wouldn't send it in for that, its normal & doesn't affect operation. HH, George (MN)
