Hi everyone, here's a Navy buckle I found 1 week and 50 feet apart. What's odd is the lastest issue of N/S Trader has a story about it on page 62.HH Jerry

A friend of mine found one and nobody seemed to be familiar with it. Has the period of use been ID'ed?

Hi C.C., the buckle shown in N/S Trader, both halves came from Fort Fisher area.Kevin also said that no one had seen that plate before. My plate was found in a field about 40-50 miles from Fort Fisher. The plate on the left has two rivits,I think there were two studs about 1/8-1/4 inch tall that the second plate hooked on.What area did your friend find his?.Been hit by plow, haven't decided on straighten yet or not.HH Jerry

This is the one CC is talking about. Our friend Jamie found it several years ago. We beleive it dates 1750-1780 as that is the era from the sites we swing. However no one had ever seen another one till now therefor even all the experts had different opinions. What age context are your sites???

Hi Len,tell Jamie that is a nice buckle,as you can tell mine came out of a corn field. What general area are ya'll in and what type did it come out of {yard, woods}.My field is part of a 1700's plantation.Did you see the article on page 62 in the latest North-South Trader? Both halves of that buckle were found near Fort Fisher.Maybe even British? Thanks for any help.HH Jerry

Just had a thought here...
I wonder if that buckle might have been fastened by leather somehow on the rivets? This would explain why the right side shows no sign of attachments. The two pieces don't really look like they would easily attach but if there is quite a bit of material missing that might explain it. Does the NS Trader speculate how it was worn/attached?

Hi C.C.,here is pic of how they fastened. The two studs is on the left half. These studs were about 1/8" to 1/4" tall.HH Jerry

Now it makes sense. I kept thinking of of a snap rather than a latch. That is a great find!

I never would have figured that out. We figured It was a decorative navy buckle.
