assuming money were no object,
1. what would be your first choice as a backup / second detector?
2. what would be your first choice on a probe

The X-1 is the only probe for the Explorer. The Whites guys drole over it.
If money is not an object it would be another Explorer or a, and I hate to say this, DFX.

Answers...
My secondary detector would be goal orientated. A water machine if I dived or something lighter weight for pure coinshooting. Here, it would depend on your interests and what you see yourself doing.
Probe. No question, a Periscope. The X1 is nice, but a machine independant probe that can be inserted into the ground is several magnitudes better than the excellent X1. I own one and love it. It save me more time and frustration than any other tool I own. I should also mention that I also own an X1.

My probe is the X1 and my backup is another explorer, and I reaaly dont feel like I need anything else.. I have a musky and a tesoro also, but never use them, I suppose if I had a desire to water hunt I would have a water machine, but really dont get turned on by jewelry unless its old

Peter,
My first and second choice are tied and cant decide which is first or second. I love my Minelab Sovereign with the Sunray goodies as it has proven to me to get the coins others have missed, while the Explorer also has proven to do well and may even get more, but do get more trash with this detector over the Sovereign. So between the 2 I think I have my first and second while the Sunray Probe are the tops with none beter if you own a Explorer or Sovereign.

I have a Sov & a S1. The X1 is a great probe. I also have the periscope. I would not be without any of these.

I already have a Periscope, and it is wonderful, but also would love to have the X1 for really hard ground, and gavel/rocks.
I have an Explorer and DFX. I'm totally satisfied with both of them.

on the probe part, I answered my own question.
Today, at 10am EST, while hunting the site of my dreams for the first time, the tip on my periscope broke. And quite frankly, I think i'd rather hunt with a broken leg than without my periscope. Frustrated after 10 minutes without it, I just threw in the towel. Mr. Ott said he will have a new one to me next day air...
GREAT PRODUCT, GREAT SERVICE!

First detector is of course the Explorer XS.
I have just purchased a reserve machine.
Another Explorer as I cant imagine searching with
second best,it also allows me to have an 8" coil at the ready.Jerry.
